Long Beach Symphony Orchestra
The Long Beach Symphony Orchestra is an American symphony orchestra based in Long Beach, California. The orchestra gives concerts at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center, specifically in the Terrace Theater and the Long Beach Arena. History The orchestra was founded in 1935 as an amateur "recreational ensemble", with Robert Resta as its first music director. The orchestra became fully professional in 1966, and hired Alberto Bolet as music director two years later. Bolet served as music director for 10 years, until 1978. The orchestra faced serious financial troubles in the mid-1980s and cancelled an entire season in 1984-85. In 1989, JoAnn Falletta became the orchestra's fourth music director, the first female music director in the orchestra's history, and held the post until 2000. Mark Swed (born ) is an American music critic who specializes in classical music. Since 1996 he has been the chief classical music critic of the ''Los Angeles Times'' where his writings have made him a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. Prior to his ''LA Times'' post, Swed was the chief music critic for the ''Los Angeles Herald Examiner'' and ''The Wall Street Journal'', and has contributed other writings to a variety of publications including '' The Orchestra'', an iPad application. JoAnn Falletta
JoAnn Falletta (born February 27, 1954 in Queens, New York) is an American conductor. Biography Falletta was raised in the borough of Queens in an Italian-American household. She was educated at the Mannes College of Music and The Juilliard School in New York City. She began her musical career as a guitar and mandolin player, and in her twenties was often called to perform with the Metropolitan Opera and New York Philharmonic when a work called for a mandolin or guitar obbligato. Falletta entered Mannes in 1972 as a guitar student, but began conducting the student orchestra in her freshman year, which initiated her interest in a conducting career. While the Mannes administration at that time expressed doubts about the ability of any woman to gain a music directorship, it consented to an official transfer of emphasis for Falletta. Enrique Arturo Diemecke (born July 9, 1952) is a Mexican conductor, violinist and composer. He is currently the Artistic General Director of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and music director of the Buenos Aires Philharmonic and the Flint Symphony Orchestra in Michigan, USA. Biography Diemecke was born in Guanajuato, Mexico to Emilio Diemecke, a professional cellist and Carmen Diemecke (Née Rodriguez) a pianist. Diemecke is one of eight musician siblings, their father was also born into a family of musicians from Leipzig, Germany. He began to play the violin at the age of six and at the age of nine he began to play the French horn, piano and percussion. Eckart Preu
Eckart Preu (born 24 August 1969) is an East German-born conductor. At the age of 10 he became a member, soloist and assistant conductor of the Boys Choir Dresdner Kreuzchor In Germany he earned a master's degree in Conducting from the Hochschule für Musik in Weimar studying under Gunther Kahlert and Nicolás Pasquet. He also studied under Jean-Sebastien Bereau at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris in France. Preu came to the United States as winner of the National Conducting Competition of the German Academic Exchange Service (1996) for graduate studies with Harold Farberman at the Hartt School of Music. Preu is currently the Music Director of the Portland Symphony Orchestra in Portland, Maine. Murry Sidlin (Baltimore, United States, 1940), is an American conductor and professor. Biography Born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1940, Sidlin studied at the Peabody Institute, graduating in 1968 with a Master's degree. Sidlin's first appointment after graduating was as Assistant Conductor at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under Sergiu Comissiona. He was later appointed Resident conductor at the National Symphony Orchestra under Antal Doráti, and with Oregon Symphony Orchestra.
