Long Bay Symphony Orchestra
The Long Bay Symphony Orchestra is an American orchestra located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It was founded by Dr. Diana Swanner-Scroggins in 1988. It is named after the long bay that stretches sixty miles along the Grand Strand region of the North and South Carolina coasts. A professional orchestra, the Symphony has both a full orchestra and a chamber orchestra series each year. In addition, the Symphony has played with many notable artists and groups. Dr. Won-Mo Kim served as the first music director/conductor for the symphony. An orchestra (; ) is a large instrumental ensemble typical of classical music, which combines instruments from different families. The Grand Strand is an arc of beach land on the Atlantic Ocean in South Carolina, United States, extending more than from Little River to Winyah Bay. It is located in Horry and Georgetown Counties on the NE South Carolina coast. Chamber Orchestra
Chamber music is a form of classical music that is composed for a small group of instruments—traditionally a group that could fit in a palace chamber or a large room. Most broadly, it includes any art music that is performed by a small number of performers, with one performer to a part (in contrast to orchestral music, in which each string part is played by a number of performers). ''The Sun News'' is a daily newspaper published in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in the United States. It serves the Grand Strand region of South Carolina with a daily circulation of 19,773 and a Sunday circulation of 26,798. It is owned by Chatham Asset Management. The ''Myrtle Beach News'' was founded as a weekly in 1935 by brothers-in-law C. L. Phillips and J. Clarence Macklen. They had recently started a printing business, and local merchants asked them to do a local newspaper. In 1961, it was sold to Mark Garner, publisher of Myrtle Beach's other newspaper, the ''Myrtle Beach Sun'' (started in 1950). Garner merged the two papers into ''The Sun News'', and soon began publishing twice weekly. With the explosive growth that occurred in the next half century, as the Grand Strand became a major tourist and retirement area, the paper stepped up its publication schedule, becoming a full-fledged daily by 1977.
