London Theatre Studio
The London Theatre Studio was a drama school, drama and design school in Upper Street, Islington, London, from 1936 to 1939. It was directed by the French actor and director Michel Saint-Denis. The school was the first in England to teach theatrical design as well as drama. It was closed at the beginning of the World War II, Second World War, and after the war its director and other instructors returned to teaching drama and design in other places. Background In 1929, with the support of Jacques Copeau, his uncle, Michel Saint-Denis and other members of Copeau's company moved to Paris and established the ''Compagnie des Quinze'', a company of actors, in which Saint-Denis put into effect the innovative teaching methods of Copeau. Reformed Baptists (sometimes known as Particular Baptists or Calvinistic Baptists) are Baptists that hold to a Calvinist soteriology (salvation). John Gielgud
Sir Arthur John Gielgud, (; 14 April 1904 – 21 May 2000) was an English actor and theatre director whose career spanned eight decades. With Ralph Richardson and Laurence Olivier, he was one of the trinity of actors who dominated the British stage for much of the 20th century. A member of the Terry family theatrical dynasty, he gained his first paid acting work as a junior member of his cousin Phyllis Neilson-Terry's company in 1922. Michael Redgrave
Sir Michael Scudamore Redgrave CBE (20 March 1908 – 21 March 1985) was an English stage and film actor, director, manager and author. He received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in ''Mourning Becomes Electra'' (1947), as well as two BAFTA nominations for Best British Actor for his performances in ''The Night My Number Came Up'' (1955) and ''Time Without Pity'' (1957). The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is a major British theatre company, based in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England. In theatre, a lighting designer (or LD) works with the director, choreographer, set designer, costume designer, and sound designer to create the lighting, atmosphere, and time of day for the production in response to the text while keeping in mind issues of visibility, safety, and cost. The LD also works closely with the stage manager or show control programming, if show control systems are used in that production. Richard Southern (theatre Designer)
Richard Southern (October 5, 1903 – August 1, 1989) was a British theatre designer and lecturer, best known for his extensive pictorial documentation of historical theatre construction, the Richard Southern Print Collection, comprising some 22,500 visual images. A prolific stage designer and theatre restorer, Southern devoted decades to researching and documenting theatre construction. Career Southern was educated at St Dunstan's College, London, then at Goldsmiths Art School and the Royal Academy of Art, where he trained as a designer. Motley Theatre Design Group
Motley was the name of the theatre design firm made up of three English designers: sisters Margaret (known as "Percy," 1904–2000) and Sophie Harris (1900–1966) and Elizabeth Montgomery (1902–1993). Career The name ''Motley'', according to Montgomery, was chosen from the medieval fabric--a rough, multicolored woven called motley--not from Shakespeare's term of ' Motley' from ''As You Like It.'' Elizabeth Montgomery (designer)
Elizabeth Alice Marjorie Montgomery (18 February 1902 – 17 May 1993), married name Elizabeth Wilmot, was an English artist who earned fame as a theatre and opera costume and scenic designer. She was a two-time Tony Award winner for Best Costume Design. Biography Montgomery was born in Kidlington, Oxfordshire, where her father, William Montgomery (cryptographer), William Montgomery, was a curate. By the time she was three, the family had moved to Cambridge, where her father lectured in theology at St John's College, Cambridge, St John's College. Audrey Sophia "Sophie" Harris (2 July 1900 – 10 March 1966) was an English award winning theatre and opera costume and scenic designer. Biography Born in Hayes, Kent, the third child and first daughter of William Birkbeck Harris, a Lloyds Insurance clerk, and his wife Kathleen Marion Carey.
