Logan Brothers
Logan Brothers was a firm of boat and yacht design and builders. Although their Auckland yard lasted only from 1890 to 1910, it was the most significant yacht- and boat-building business in the Southern Hemisphere during its time, dominating the New Zealand market and exporting vessels to Australia, South Africa and to the Pacific Islands. Archibald ''Arch'' Logan (28 November 1865 – 27 March 1940) was a New Zealand sailing yacht designer who was a leading figure in New Zealand yachting from approximately 1895 until his death. The Arch Logan Memorial Trophy named in his honour is the premier trophy of the New Zealand M class centreboard racing dinghy sailing completions. Early life Archibald Logan was born on 28 November 1865 at Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, the third of eight children of Robert Logan and Margaret McLay. Robert, who was a boat builder, and his family emigrated to New Zealand, arriving in Auckland on the ''Zealandia'' on 15 October 1874. Robert Logan (Senior)
Robert Logan Senior (1837–1919) was a boat builder and the founder of the Logan boat building and boat designing dynasty. Early life He was born in Dumbarton, Scotland, in 1837, and was educated in Glasgow. By the early 1870s Robert was foreman of a boat-building firm of Robert Steele & Co in Greenock on the River Clyde. During this time he received a commission from his older brother James who had emigrated to New Zealand in 1864 and was now based in Auckland. He was to build a small steamer, named the ''Eclipse'', for the service from Auckland to Riverhead at the head of the Waitematā Harbour and have it shipped there from Glasgow. Emigration to New Zealand Subsequently, Robert Logan decided to join his brother and together with his family emigrated to New Zealand, arriving in Auckland on the ''Zealandia'' on 15 October 1874. Agathis Australis
''Agathis australis'', commonly known by its Māori name kauri (), is a coniferous tree in the family ''Araucariaceae'', found north of 38°S in the northern regions of New Zealand's North Island. It is the largest (by volume) but not tallest species of tree in New Zealand, standing up to 50 m tall in the emergent layer above the forest's main canopy. Tuaikaepau
''Tuaikaepau'' was a twenty-ton cutter, length, clipper bow, keeler, designed by Archibald Logan and built by Logan Brothers of Auckland, New Zealand and launched in 1903. In July 1962 the ''Tuaikaepau'' was under sail between Tonga and Auckland, carrying a crew and passengers totalling 17. On 7 July 1962 the ''Tuaikaepau'', under the command of captain David Fifita, hit the outer edge of the Southern Minerva Reef. They all survived having spent the night clinging to the hull and at day break saw what would be their saviour: the hull of a Japanese fishing boat, Number 10, ''Noshemi Maru'', K30, which had been wrecked in 1960, two years earlier.
