Loew's Valencia Theatre
The Loew's Valencia Theatre is a former movie palace at 16511 Jamaica Avenue in Queens, New York City. Built in 1929 as one of the Loew's Wonder Theatres, the theater was donated to The Tabernacle of Prayer for All People in 1977. It was designated an exterior landmark on May 25, 1999 by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. Background In 1926–27, builder Ralph Riccardo acquired the site at Jamaica Avenue and Merrick Road, selling half of the site to the Famous Players-Lasky Corporation (Paramount) who then sold the property to Loew’s. Construction started in June 1928 by the Thompson-Starrett Company and was completed in December of that year. It was designed by John Eberson, known for his atmospheric theaters. A movie palace (or picture palace in the United Kingdom) is any of the large, elaborately decorated movie theaters built between the 1910s and the 1940s. The late 1920s saw the peak of the movie palace, with hundreds opening every year between 1925 and 1930. With the advent of television, movie attendance dropped, while the rising popularity of large Multiplex (movie theater), multiplex chains signaled the obsolescence of single-screen theaters. Loews Cineplex Entertainment, also known as Loews Incorporated, is an American theater chain operating in North America. From 1924 until 1959, it was also the parent company of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM). The company was originally called "Loew's," after the founder, Marcus Loew. The Balboa Theatre is a historic vaudeville/movie theatre in downtown San Diego, US, built in 1924.
