Lodge Moor Hospital
Lodge Moor Hospital is a former isolation hospital on Redmires Road in the Lodge Moor area of the City of Sheffield, England. The hospital which opened in 1888 and closed in 1994 initially treated Smallpox but soon broadened its treatment to other infectious diseases and in its latter years expanded to provide more general nursing, notably spinal injuries and chest medicine. At the time of closure, the hospital was operated by the Central Sheffield University Hospitals NHS Trust. History Lodge Moor hospital was erected as a result of the Sheffield smallpox epidemic of 1887–1888. With this in mind Sheffield Corporation sought permission of the Local Government Board to borrow £12,000 to build an isolation hospital. The Board granted the request and the Council appointed the building contract ...

History Of Sheffield
The history of Sheffield, a city in South Yorkshire, England, can be traced back to the founding of a settlement in a clearing beside the River Sheaf in the second half of the 1st millennium AD. The area now known as Sheffield had seen human occupation since at least the last ice age, but significant growth in the settlements that are now incorporated into the city did not occur until the Industrial Revolution. Following the Norman conquest of England, Sheffield Castle was built to control the Saxon settlements and Sheffield developed into a small town, no larger than Sheffield City Centre. By the 14th century Sheffield was noted for the production of knives, and by 1600, overseen by the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, it had become the second centre of cutlery production in England after London. In the 1740s the crucible steel process was improved by Sheffield resident Benjamin Huntsman, allowing a much better production quality. At about the same time, Sheffield plate, a ...

Wilson Bowden
Wilson Bowden plc was a British housebuilding and general construction company headquartered in Coalville in central England. History Wilson Bowden was the holding company for David Wilson Homes and its commercial property subsidiary, Wilson Bowden Properties, the name being adopted at the time of the group's flotation in 1987. David Wilson joined his father’s joinery workshop in 1960 and during that decade gradually moved the business into housebuilding. By the early 1970s, AH Wilson (as it was then named) was building around 150 houses a year in the Leicestershire area. A joint property investment with First National Finance Corporation, Bowden Park Holdings, was wholly acquired in 1973 when First National got into financial difficulty. David Wilson expanded substantially in the 1980s with sales rising from 300 to 1,600 in the decade, while group profits increased from £2 million to £40 million. As a result of conservative land buying policies, Wilson Bowden surviv ...

Hathersage
Hathersage ( ) is a village and civil parish in the Peak District in Derbyshire, England. It lies slightly to the north of the River Derwent, approximately south-west of Sheffield. Toponymy The origin of its name is disputed, although it is generally accepted that the second half derives from the Old English word ''ecg'' meaning "edge". In 1086, it was recorded in the Domesday Book as ''Hereseige'' and, around 1220, as ''Hauersegg''. History Pre-history Mesolithic microliths have been found below Stanage Edge, indicating ancient occupation of the area. In the Outseats area, there is evidence of Bronze Age field system, settlement and burial cairn at Dennis Knoll. Close to a now recumbent 2.3m high boundary marker on Bamford Moor is an embanked stone circle or possibly a ring cairn between 11m and 10m diameter. Roman period There are remains of a Romano-British settlement, possibly a farmstead at a location known as the Warren in the Outseats area. Finds from this sit ...
