''Locotracteurs Gaston Moyse'' was a French manufacturer of diesel shunting locomotives. Founded in 1922 by Gaston Moyse, the company closed in the late 1970s. The company produced numerous shunting locomotives, including the Y 7400 and Y 8000 for the French state railways (SNCF), and classes CP 1020 and CP 1050 for the Portuguese state railways (Comboios de Portugal CP — Comboios de Portugal, EPE (''CP''; English: ''Trains of Portugal'') is a state-owned company which operates passenger trains in Portugal. A switcher, shunter, yard pilot, switch engine, yard goat, or shifter is a small railroad locomotive used for manoeuvring railroad cars inside a rail yard in a process known as ''switching'' (US) or ''shunting'' (UK). Switchers are not intended for moving trains over long distances but rather for assembling trains in order for another locomotive to take over. They do this in classification yards (Great Britain: ''marshalling yards''). Switchers may also make short transfer runs and even be the only motive power on branch lines and switching and terminal railroads. The term can also be used to describe the workers operating these engines or engaged in directing shunting operations. SNCF Class Y 7400
The Y 7400 class of small shunters is France's most numerous with 488 locomotives in the production build. The first 120 were built by Decauville, with further batches built by De Dietrich (105) and Moyse (263). They have the 0-4-0 ("B") wheel arrangement, 150 kW diesel engines and mechanical transmission. They can be found all over the French network. During 1959 Y 7192 was converted to mechanical transmission and renumbered as Y 7001. This locomotive was the prototype for the Y7400 class. The SNCF Class Y 8000 is a class of diesel shunter built between 1977 and 1990. History and design The locomotives were developed by SNCF for shunting duties. Initial construction was by Locotracteurs Gaston Moyse until that company ceased business, then by Fauvet Girel. Y 8000 machines were used to replace older shunting engines, as well as trip work on minor lines. The locomotives were 2 axle machines with both axles powered by a Poyaud (SSCM) diesel engine via a Voith hydraulic transmission.
