Lock And Dam No. 22
Lock and Dam No. 22 is a lock and dam located near Saverton, Missouri, on the Upper Mississippi River around river mile 301.2. The movable portion of the dam is long and consists of three roller gates and ten tainter gates. A long submersible earthen dike extends to a flood control levee on the Illinois shore. The main lock is wide by long; there is also an incomplete auxiliary lock. In 2004, the facility was listed in the National Register of Historic Places as Lock and Dam No. 22 Historic District, #04000182 covering , 1 building, 5 structures, 4 objects. Upper Mississippi River
The Upper Mississippi River is the portion of the Mississippi River upstream of St. Louis, Missouri, United States, at the confluence of its main tributary, the Missouri River. A gravity dam is a dam constructed from concrete or stone masonry and designed to hold back water by using only the weight of the material and its resistance against the foundation to oppose the horizontal pressure of water pushing against it. Gravity dams are designed so that each section of the dam is stable and independent of any other dam section. Characteristics Gravity dams generally require stiff rock foundations of high bearing strength (slightly weathered to fresh), although in rare cases, they have been built on soil foundations.
