Ascona

The town is a popular tourist destination and holds the yearly Ascona Jazz Festival. History Prehistory The oldest archaeological finds in Ascona (at S. Materno and S. Michele) go back to the beginnings of the Late Bronze Age. During the expansion of the cemetery in 1952, a necropolis was discovered at S. Materno, where 21 cremation urns were discovered. The urns were either simply buried or covered with a stone slab box. They contained cremated bones and, in some cases, bronze grave goods. Of particular interest are the bronze brooches, which are among the oldest that have been found so far in Switzerland. Minusio
Minusio is a municipality in the district of Locarno in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. History In the Ceresole section, a significant Iron Age necropolis (c. 6th-5th century BC) was discovered. It held about 20 graves and rich grave goods. Nearby, several Roman graveyards from the 1st and 2nd Centuries AD, were discovered. The Roman graveyards are among the most important in Ticino because of the complexity of the system and the amount of material. A discovery in 1936 found about 30 graves. In the Roman era, Minusio was a minor settlement outside of Muralto, which was the center of the Roman presence in the Locarno area. Minusio is first mentioned in 1061 as ''Menuxio'', though this comes from a copy of the original from 1402. In 1200 it was mentioned as ''Menuxio''. Gordola
Gordola () is a municipality in the district of Locarno in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. History Gordola is first mentioned in 1200 as ''Gordora''. In 1219, it was mentioned as ''Gordolla/e''. Gordola was located near major roads throughout its history. During the Middle Ages, the village was on the hills as the valley floor was covered in swamps. In the 11th-12th Centuries, a castle was built on the shore of Lake Maggiore for the feudal lord appointed by the Bishop of Como. The castle had disappeared by the 14th Century. The ''Capitanei'' of Locarno owned land and were landlords in Gordola. Within the territory of Locarno, Gordola was the only '' Vicinanza'', which could choose its own pastor. Losone
Losone is a municipality in the district of Locarno in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. History The peat bogs of Arcegno, the rock shelters of Quarigo and the rock carvings in soapstone and gneiss appear to confirm that Losone has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. In 1934 and again in 1970-73 grave goods from the 1st to 4th Centuries were found. There are also traces of a further use of the grave yard in the 6th Century as well. Orselina
Orselina is a municipality in the district of Locarno in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. History Orselina is first mentioned in 1182 as ''Concilio Meziano''. In 1323 it was mentioned as ''Orsarina''. During the Middle Ages and into the Early Modern Period, it (along with Burbaglio and Muralto) was part of the '' Vicinanza'' of Consiglio Mezzano, which belonged to the Locarno and Ascona region. Lavertezzo
Lavertezzo is a municipality in the district of Locarno in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. History Lavertezzo is first mentioned in 1327 as ''Laverteze''. In the Middle Ages, Lavertezzo was a ''Squadra'' of the '' Vicinanza'' of Verzasca. For centuries, the people lived in the summer months in the Verzasca valley and migrated in the winter, with their cattle, to the lower valleys. After the dissolution of Terricciole in 1920, a shared territory between Locarno, Minusio and Mergoscia, the settlement of Riazzino was allocated to Lavertezzo.
