Local Government New Zealand Te Kahui Kaunihera ō Aotearoa (LGNZ) is the local government association of New Zealand. It represents the interests of the regional, city, and district councils in New Zealand. History The Association was formed in 1988 when, confronted with pending local government reform, the Municipal Association and the Counties Association agreed to merge into a single local government association. Two years later, in 1990, the New Zealand Regional Government Association (representing the nation's regional councils) agreed to join. In 1996 the amalgamated association adopted the brand name Local Government New Zealand. About Local Government New Zealand carries out a range of functions. Kerry Prendergast
Dame Kerry Leigh Prendergast (née Ferrier, born 28 March 1953) is a New Zealand politician who served as the 33rd Mayor of Wellington between 2001 and 2010, succeeding Mark Blumsky. She was the second woman to hold the position, after Fran Wilde. Early life Prendergast was born in Christchurch but grew up in Tawa, attending Tawa College (1966–69), where she was captain of the college netball team. She qualified as a registered nurse and then trained as a midwife and was later awarded the Royal New Zealand Plunket Society Long Service Award in 1991. She has also been a voluntary grief counsellor. She holds a MBA degree from Victoria University of Wellington. Territorial authorities are the second tier of local government in New Zealand, below regional councils. There are 67 territorial authorities: 13 city councils, 53 district councils and the Chatham Islands Council. District councils serve a combination of rural and urban communities, while city councils administer the larger urban areas.City councils serve a population of more than 50,000 in a predominantly urban area. Five territorial authorities (Auckland, Nelson, Gisborne, Tasman and Marlborough) also perform the functions of a regional council and thus are unitary authorities. Oliver Marc Hartwich (born 8 July 1975 in Gelsenkirchen) is a German economist and media commentator. He is the Executive Director of the think tank The New Zealand Initiative in Wellington and a columnist with the online magazine Newsroom. Education and career Hartwich graduated from Ruhr University Bochum in 2000 with a Diplom-Ökonom. He was a visiting fellow at the Law of School of University of Sydney in 2001/02 and later received a doctorate in law, also from the Ruhr University, under the supervision of Professor Daniel Zimmer in 2004. He started his career as a Research Assistant to Lord Oakeshott in the UK House of Lords in 2004. From January 2005 to October 2008, he worked for the conservative British think tank Policy Exchange, first as a Research Fellow and then as Chief Economist. Sir Maarten Laurens Wevers (born 24 March 1952) is a New Zealand diplomat and public servant, who served as New Zealand's High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea and Ambassador to Japan. He was the Chief Executive of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet from 2004 to 2012. Wevers was born in Hengelo, Netherlands, on 24 March 1952 and emigrated to New Zealand when he was just over one year old. He became a naturalised New Zealand citizen in 1954. Lawrence Arden Yule (born 1963) is a New Zealand politician. He was Mayor of Hastings from 2001 to 2017, and a Member of Parliament representing the Tukituki electorate for the National Party from 2017 to 2020. Political career Mayor of Hastings Yule became mayor of Hastings in 2001. In this role he presided over the Hastings District Council. When elected he was the youngest person to become mayor of Hastings. In 2016, the Hastings district was hit by an outbreak of campylobacter in drinking water which affected thousands of people.
