Albanian ( endonym: or ) is an Indo-European language and an independent branch of that family of languages. It is spoken by the Albanians in the Balkans and by the Albanian diaspora, which is generally concentrated in the Americas, Europe and Oceania. Llazar (Zai) Fundo (born March 20, 1899 in Görice, Manastir Vilayet, Ottoman Empire died September 20, 1944 in Kukës, Albania) was an Albanian Communist, later social-democratic journalist and writer. He was a former member of the Comintern and the Balkan Communist Federation. He was associated with the Fan S. Noli government in 1924 and became the leader of the ''Bashkimi'' organization after the death of Avni Rustemi in 1924. In 1928 he helped establish the Korçë Communist Group. In the fierce rivalry for power control within the Communist Party, he was branded a Trotskyist and purged from the party. Biography Fundo was born in Görice (now Korçë, Albania) to a family of merchants originating from Moscopole, of Aromanian origin. He attended the French Lycée of Salonica and later studied law in Paris, France. Lazër Mjeda (1869–1935) was an Albanian prelate of the Roman Catholic Church, and a member of the Mjeda family. Biography Lazër (Llazar) Mjeda was born in Shkodër, Ottoman Empire — present-day Albania — on March 6, 1869. From 1900 to 1904 he was the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sapë, while from 1905 to 1909 he was the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Shkodër. During this time, the Catholic Church also made him the Titular Archbishop for the Diocese of Areopolis. From mid 1909 till late 1921, Mjeda was the Archbishop of the Diocese of Skopje. From 1921 he was the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Shkodër-Pult. Llazar Siliqi
Llazar Siliqi (1924 – 2001) was a notable Albanian poet. His poetic profile was influenced by the work of Mayakovsky. Siliqi was born in Shkodër, the son of the Albanian poet and nationalist figure Risto Siliqi. He was an active participant of the Albanian resistance during World War II, was arrested and interned in the Nazi concentration camp in Pristina, today's Kosovo. Siliqi was the librettist of the first Albanian opera, ''Mrika'', composed by Prenkë Jakova, as well as ''Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu'' (Scanderbeg) of 1969, an epic-heroic work written to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Scanderbeg, Albania's national hero, with music from Jakova as well.
