Llanwrtyd railway station (also known as Llanwrtyd Wells railway station) serves the town of Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, Wales. The station is on the Heart of Wales Line north east of Swansea. The railway station is located at street level at Station Road near the town centre. All trains serving the station are operated by Transport for Wales. History Opened by the LNWR on 6 May 1867, as part of the company's Central Wales Extension Railway project, it is the location of one of the route's five remaining passing loops. Llanwrtyd Wells ( cy, Llanwrtyd "church of St Gwrtud") is a market town and community in Powys, Wales, in the historic county of Brecknockshire (Breconshire) on the Afon Irfon. The town is on the A483 between Llandovery and Builth Wells and is located near the pass between the Tywi and Irfon valleys. The community also includes the smaller settlements of Llanwrtyd and Abergwesyn, the valley of the Afon Irfon, and a large part of the "Desert of Wales". With a population of 850 (United Kingdom Census 2011), it claims to be the smallest town in Britain, although Fordwich in Kent has a smaller population. A passing loop (UK usage) or passing siding (North America) (also called a crossing loop, crossing place, refuge loop or, colloquially, a hole) is a place on a single line railway or tramway, often located at or near a station, where trains or trams travelling in opposite directions can pass each other. Trains/trams going in the same direction can also overtake, provided that the signalling arrangement allows it. Sugar Loaf railway station is a railway station in Powys, Wales, and is the most geographically remote station on the Heart of Wales Line. It is located northeast of a small but prominent knoll known as Sugar Loaf, Carmarthenshire, Sugar Loaf, around which the A483 road loops.
