Llantwit Major RFC
Llantwit Major Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union club based in Llantwit Major in Wales. Llantwit Major RFC is a member of the Welsh Rugby Union and is a feeder club for the Cardiff Blues. It is believed that rugby was played in Llantwit Major as far back as 1880, though the first recorded game was in 1889 against a team from Cowbridge. The club disbanded during the Second World War but reformed soon after and in 1962 gained membership to the Welsh Rugby Union. The club enjoyed considerable success in the early 1960s by dominating the prestige Glamorgan County Silver Ball cup competition reaching the semi-finals in 1963 before winning the title in 1964 and 1965. In recent times the club had another notable cup run in reaching the final of the Welsh Rugby Union National Bowl Competition at the Millennium Stadium; ultimately losing despite being cheered on by well over 800 Llantonian supporters in an enthralling 17-10 game to Clwb Rygbi Cymry Caerdydd. Llantwit Major
Llantwit Major ( cy, Llanilltud Fawr) is a town and community in Wales on the Bristol Channel coast. It is one of four towns in the Vale of Glamorgan, with the third largest population (13,366 in 2001) after Barry and Penarth, and ahead of Cowbridge. It is from Cowbridge, from Bridgend, from Barry, and from Cardiff. It had a population of 9,486 in 2011. ''Llanilltud Fawr'', named for the Llan of Saint Illtud, was home to the Monastery of Illtud and the college known as Bangor Illtyd. It became one of the most esteemed centres of Christian culture in the Celtic world. At its peak it had over 2000 students, including princes, eminent clergymen, and revered saints. Ernest Edward George (1871 – 28 November 1952) was a Welsh international rugby union forward who played club rugby for a variety of teams, but is most associated with Pontypridd and Cardiff. John Yapp
John Yapp (born 9 April 1983) is a Welsh international rugby union player, currently with Edinburgh. He first played for Cardiff during the Christmas period in 2002. He made his first team debut against Ebbw Vale on Boxing Day at the age of 18. Despite his young age, he was featured in 17 of a possible 19 games by the end of the season and had been called up to train with the Wales-under-21 squad. Yapp has represented Cardiff Youth and under-21s, winning cup and league medals and playing for Wales at under-19 level. Originally educated at Cowbridge Comprehensive School, he had first team experience with the Llantwit Major and Pontypridd clubs before becoming a full-time Cardiff Blues squad member. Wilson Lauder
Wilson Lauder (born 4 November 1948) is a former Scotland rugby union international based in Wales. Lauder was born in the village of Thornton in Fife, Scotland. He spent several years of his childhood in Rhodesia and when he was 11 years of age his family settled in Bridgend, Wales, where he attended Heol Gam Secondary School. Having not played rugby union until his arrival in Wales, Lauder developed his game under the mentorship of Wales fullback Grahame Hodgson, who taught at his school. He represented Wales Schoolboys in 1963–64. Lauder played his early rugby with Llantwit Major, before switching to Neath in the 1967–68 season, to begin a 10-year career at The Gnoll. In 1971, he broke the Neath record for most points in a game twice in the space of a fortnight. A flanker, Lauder represented the country of his birth in international rugby. Simon Hill (rugby Union)
Simon David Hill (born 27 May 1968) is a Welsh International rugby union player. He made twelve appearances for his country, as well as representing Cardiff RFC and Bridgend RFC in the top division of Welsh club rugby. Club career Hill was brought up in Llantwit Major playing for the local school rugby team then youth rugby with Llantwit Major RFC. Whilst attending college in Yorkshire he played for Headingley and when ever home regularly turned out for the Llantwit Major senior teams. He joined Cardiff RFC for the 1990/91 season. He remained with the club for ten seasons, making 241 appearances for the club. Dafydd Hewitt (born 21 August 1985) is a retired Welsh rugby union player. A centre, from Llantwit Major RFC he played at every level for his local club before stepping up to regional rugby in 2004 with the Cardiff Blues.
