Llanharry
Llanharry ( cy, Llanhari) is a village, Community (Wales), community (civil parish) and electoral ward in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. Historic counties of Wales, Historically part of Glamorgan, Llanharry has been inextricably linked with iron mining as far back as the Roman period, and for a period in the 20th century it boasted the only iron mine in Wales. The town is infamous for being the site of the murders of Harry and Megan Tooze, which remain some of Wales' most notorious unsolved murders. Employment Llanharry iron mine worked from the early 1900s but closed in 1976; its main ore was goethite, which was used at the local ironworks. Since the closure of its mines and ironworks, Llanharry has been in economic decline, as are most South Wales Valleys villages once dependent on heavy industry. Murders Of Harry And Megan Tooze
The murders of Harry and Megan Tooze, also known as the Llanharry murders, were the high-profile killings of an elderly couple at their remote Ty Ar y Waun farm near Llanharry, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, United Kingdom, on 26 July 1993. The couple were shot dead at point blank range with a shotgun in an execution-style killing, and their killer had attempted to hide their bodies in the cowshed of the farm. Their best china was found mysteriously laid out on the table in the farmhouse as if the couple were expecting a close guest, and their lunch was found cooked but not eaten on the stove. It was described by the lead detective in charge of the case as the "most baffling" case he had investigated. Jonathan Jones, the boyfriend of the Toozes' daughter, was initially convicted of their murders in 1995. Llanharry Railway Station
Llanharry railway station served the village of Llanharry in the Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales. Description The station opened in August 1871. It was located just south of the Llanharry Road bridge and was initially a single platform without any form of shelter. It was located about three-quarters of a mile from the village which it served. The line was opened by the Cowbridge Railway and taken over by the Taff Vale Railway in 1889, and Llanharry was updated. The station was re-sited on the other side of the line and had a station building added. This was built of yellow bricks with red quoins, and was similar to those built elsewhere on the line. Shortly after the new station was built, the old one was removed. Closure The station closed to passengers in 1951. In 1965, the track from Llanharry onward was dismantled. Rhondda Cynon Taf (; RCT; also spelt as Rhondda Cynon Taff) is a county borough in the south-east of Wales. Ysgol Llanhari is a Welsh-medium school for 3-19 year olds situated in the village of Llanharry, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. History Llanhari is one of the Welsh medium secondary schools in the area, having opened in 1974. It followed Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen in leading the way in Welsh medium education in South Wales. In 1974, the school was located in the county of Mid Glamorgan and had a huge catchment area from Tonteg and Cardiff in the east, all the way to Porthcawl and Maesteg in the west. It became popular very quickly and grew in numbers, becoming oversubscribed. Within a few years, it was decided that South Glamorgan pupils would be educated in their own county and in 1978, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf opened in Cardiff. M4 Motorway
The M4, originally the London-South Wales Motorway, is a motorway in the United Kingdom running from west London to southwest Wales. The English section to the Severn Bridge was constructed between 1961 and 1971; the Welsh element was largely complete by 1980, though a non-motorway section around Briton Ferry bridge remained until 1993.
