Liz Horton
Elizabeth Leigh Horton (born October 3, 1984), sometimes known as Liz Horton, was Miss North Carolina 2006 and is now a freelance meteorologist at CBS 4 WFOR-TV in Miami, Florida. Education Horton is a 2002 graduate of Westchester Country Day School in High Point, North Carolina. She graduated from Mississippi State University in 2014, earning a Bachelor in Geosciences degree with a concentration in Meteorology. Prior to studying at MSU, she attended the Carolina School of Broadcasting, and obtained two degrees from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University: a Bachelor's of Music with a Vocal Performance concentration, and a Bachelor's of Music Education. Miss North Carolina
The Miss North Carolina competition selects the representative for the state of North Carolina to compete in the annual Miss America competition. The competition has been held in Raleigh every year since 1978. Prior to that, it was held in various locales including Charlotte, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Durham, Burlington, Wilmington, and Morehead City. Karolyn Martin of Charlotte was crowned Miss North Carolina 2022 on June 25, 2022 at High Point Theatre in High Point, North Carolina. She competed for the title of Miss America 2023 at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut in December 2022. 75th anniversary The Miss North Carolina pageant celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2012. Miss America 2007, the 80th Miss America pageant, was held on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada on Monday, January 29, 2007, making it the first time that the pageant was held on a weekday, rather than the traditional Saturday since 1927's contest. The pageant was broadcast live on CMT from the Theatre for the Performing Arts at the Aladdin Resort and Casino, only the second time that the pageant has been held outside Atlantic City. At the conclusion of the final night of competition, outgoing titleholder Jennifer Berry crowned Lauren Nelson as her successor. Miss America
Miss America is an annual competition that is open to women from the United States between the ages of 17 and 25. Originating in 1921 as a "bathing beauty revue", the contest is now judged on competitors' talent performances and interviews. As of 2018, there is no longer a swimsuit portion to the contest, or consideration of physical appearance. Miss America travels about 20,000 miles a month, changing her location every 24 to 48 hours, touring the nation and promoting her particular platform of interest. Brooke Elizabeth McLaurin, (born June 13, 1981) is an American beauty pageant titleholder from Eastover, North Carolina who was named Miss North Carolina 2005. Biography She won the title of Miss North Carolina on June 25, 2005, when she received her crown from outgoing titleholder Kirstin Elrod. At the age of 22, McLaurin was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After successful surgery to remove the tumor, she changed her platform to brain tumor awareness and research, and was able to raise $10,000 for brain tumor research. McLaurin is a graduate of Fayetteville State University.
