Liverpool Street, Hobart
Liverpool Street is a street in the Hobart City Centre, in the state of Tasmania. It runs parallel to Macquarie and Davey Streets from Brooker Highway, Brooker Avenue in the north, then southward through the central section of the CBD where it crosses Campbell Street, Argyle Street, Murray Street and Elizabeth Street, Hobart, Elizabeth Street, and then on to the south end of the city centre. It was well photographed at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. Historically locals referred to the "west end" of Hobart's CBD when frequenting the cinema or theatre along Liverpool Street, which was home to the Odeon Theatre, Hobart, Odeon Theatre and His Majesty’s Theatre. Village Cinemas capitalised on this in 1976, naming Tasmania's first multiplex on nearby Collins Street, Hobart, Collins Street the ''West End Twin''. Brooker Highway
The Brooker Highway is a highway in the State of Tasmania, Australia. As one of Hobart's 3 major radials, the highway connects traffic from the Hobart city centre with the northern suburbs and is the major road connection to the cities and towns of Northern Tasmania. With an AADT of 48,000, the highway is one of the busiest in Tasmania. The Brooker Highway has recently been declared part of the National Highway. The Brooker Highway runs approximately north from the CBD, through the northern suburbs of Hobart, and through the City of Glenorchy, bypassing commercial and industrial centres along the original Main Road. It is primarily a four lane (dual-carriageway) highway, and apart from the Domain Highway junction, only the northern sections of the highway have grade separated junctions. West Hobart, Tasmania
West Hobart is an inner-city suburb of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It is in the hills immediately west of the city centre, and shares the postcode 7000 with that district. History The area was first settled as a farming district, hosting poultry, dairy, hops, orchards and Chinese market gardens. Elizabeth Street, Hobart
Elizabeth Street is the major street which runs southeast to northwest through the city and suburbs of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It was named by the Governor of New South Wales from 1810 to 1821, Lachlan Macquarie, after his wife Elizabeth Macquarie. It starts at Sullivans Cove and runs northwesterly through the CBD of Hobart and the North Hobart shopping district including the State Cinema, and changes to become New Town Road at the intersection with Augusta Road in New Town. The Elizabeth Street Pier extends into Sullivan's Cove (the Port of Hobart) from Franklin Wharf near the intersection with Elizabeth Street. The Odeon Theatre (formerly known as The Strand Theatre) is a historic former cinema and live entertainment venue in the city of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. History The idea for a world-class theatre for the people of Tasmania was conceived by merchant E.J. Miller, who made his fortune on the Zeehan mineral field. Miller would have witnessed the rising popularity of the first silent films in vaudeville programming at the Gaiety Theatre and Theatre Royal in the township of Zeehan. Travelling to the United States, Miller visited every major city and studied the latest picture theatre designs to immerse himself in the emerging industry. On his return to Tasmania he engaged with Hobart architect George Stanley Crisp, who had previously designed the Art Nouveau Palace Theatre opposite the Hobart GPO on Elizabeth Street. Royal Hobart Hospital
The Royal Hobart Hospital is a public hospital in the Hobart CBD, Tasmania, Australia. The hospital also functions as a teaching hospital in co-operation with the University of Tasmania. The hospital's research facilities are known as the Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation. Also close to the hospital site is the Menzies Research Institute. Trams In Hobart
Trams no longer operate in Hobart, the capital of the Australian state of Tasmania, but the city once had an extensive and popular system that reached the majority of its suburbs. It was the first complete electric tram system in the Southern Hemisphere, and the only one in Australia to operate double-decker trams. Opened in 1893 by a private consortium, the network was taken over in 1913 by the Hobart City Council, who ran a successful network for much of the early twentieth century, reaching its peak in 1937.
