Liverpool St Helens Football Club is an England, English rugby union team formed from the merger of Liverpool Football Club and St. Helens RUFC. The institution is not to be confused with either Liverpool F.C. (playing association football) or St Helens R.F.C., St. Helens (playing rugby league). History The club's first match took place in 1857 when old boy network, old boys from Rugby School, Rugby school challenged local boys to a game under their school rules. Liverpool Football Club were then formed, the oldest open rugby club in the world. In 1871, the club provided four of the England team that played Scotland in the first rugby international. On 5 February 1877 another Liverpool player, Edward Kewley, was captain of England when they played Ireland in what was the first 15-a-side international. Rugby Football Union
The Rugby Football Union (RFU) is the Sports governing body, national governing body for rugby union in England. It was founded in 1871, and was the sport's international governing body prior to the formation of what is now known as World Rugby (WR) in 1886. It promotes and runs the sport, organises international matches for the England national rugby union team, England national team, and educates and trains players and officials. The RFU is an industrial and provident society owned by over 2,000 member clubs, representing over 2.5 million registered players, and forms the largest rugby union society in the world, and one of the largest sports organisations in England. Fran Cotton
Francis Edward Cotton (born 3 January 1947) is a former rugby union prop forward who played for England and the British Lions. His clubs included Coventry R.F.C. and Sale. After retiring, he remained in rugby administration and founded a clothing company. In 2007, Cotton returned to his former club Sale as a member of the club's board. Cotton was born in Wigan, Lancashire, and went to Loughborough University to study physical education. Cotton was ahead of his time in terms of physical preparation. It was during these years that Cotton would win the Glengarth Sevens at Stockport Rugby Club along with Steve Smith and Clive Rees. Cotton made his England debut against Scotland in 1971, and played for them 31 times. He also captained the English team three times. Frank Tobin
Frank Tobin CBE was a rugby union international who represented England in the first international rugby match in 1871. Early life Tobin was born in Liverpool on 23 September 1849. He was educated at Rugby School where he played football using rugby school rules. After leaving education he returned to Liverpool where he played for the rugby union side Liverpool F.C. Rugby union career Tobin, having played rugby at school, went on to play for Liverpool F.C. (latterly Liverpool St Helens). Tobin was selected to play in the first international match in 1871. He was one of only a handful of players selected from clubs outside London. The match was played on 27 March 1871 at Edinburgh against Scotland, which the hosts won. In the match he was said to have played splendidly behind the scrummage. North 1 West is a rugby union league at the sixth level within the English league system. The league is made up of teams from north west England and the Isle of Man; principally consisting of the English counties of Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside. The league was known as North Division 2 when it was first created back in 1987 and was a single division. It has since split into two regional leagues, with North West 1 and its compatriot North 1 East being the longest running versions of the division. Lancashire Cup Rugby Union
The Lancashire Cup was an English Rugby Football Union competition founded in 1971. It was organized by the Lancashire Rugby Football Union and was open to all eligible clubs in the Lancashire region including a number of clubs in Cheshire and Merseyside. The men's competition was discontinued at the end of 2013 as there were not enough teams willing to participate in the cup (partly due to the increased demands of league rugby). History Despite the Lancashire RFU being established in 1881 and having the most successful county team in the country, club rugby union took a long time to catch on in Lancashire. Dewi Morris (born ) is a former rugby union footballer, who played scrum half for England. Morris was born in Crickhowell, Breconshire, Wales, and graduated from Crewe & Alsager College. He made his England debut in 1988, as a twenty-four year old, against Australia, scoring a try as part of England's victory. He was dropped in 1990 in favour of Richard Hill, but returned to the England side in 1992 and was the Lions scrum-half in 1993. Early on in his playing career, Dewi played for Winnington Park Rugby Football Club in Cheshire. Dewi also played for Liverpool St. Helens, winning the Lancashire Cup, before moving on to play for local rivals, Orrell. John Horton (rugby Union)
John Philip Horton (born ) is a retired English rugby union player. Born in St. Helens, Merseyside John grew up in the Windle area of the town and attended the nearby high school, now known as Cowley International College where he started playing both rugby league and rugby union. Playing Career After a brief stint playing for local side Liverpool St Helens F.C., his first semi-professional contract was at Sale Sharks. Horton then moved to Bath to play professionally whilst teaching, making 380 appearances for the club between 1973 and 1985. He made his debut against Terenure in 1973 and captained the side in 1976-77 and 1979-80. During his time at Bath, Horton amassed a total of 80 tries and a remarkable 125 drop goals. He later played for Bristol when Stuart Barnes joined from the West Country rivals in 1985.
