Liverpool (privateer)
The ''Liverpool'' was a British privateer that operated during the Seven Years' War. She made four cruises from June 1757 to March 1759, and took more than a dozen prizes in an 18 month career. She was described as ‘one of the finest privateers belonging to the period’. Description ''Liverpool'' was a ship-rigged merchant ship from the city of Liverpool which was outfitted as a privateer in the spring of 1757, after the outbreak of war between the Britain and France. she was outfitted by a Mr. Hardwar and was captained by William Hutchinson, an associate of Mersey privateer Fortunatus Wright. Privateer
A privateer is a private person or ship that engages in maritime warfare under a commission of war. Since robbery under arms was a common aspect of seaborne trade, until the early 19th century all merchant ships carried arms. A sovereign or delegated authority issued commissions, also referred to as a letter of marque, during wartime. The commission empowered the holder to carry on all forms of hostility permissible at sea by the usages of war. This included attacking foreign vessels and taking them as prizes, and taking prize crews as prisoners for exchange. Captured ships were subject to condemnation and sale under prize law, with the proceeds divided by percentage between the privateer's sponsors, shipowners, captains and crew. A percentage share usually went to the issuer of the commission (i.e. the sovereign). William Hutchinson (privateer)
William Hutchinson (1715 probably in Newcastle upon Tyne, England – February 11, 1801 in Liverpool, England) was an English mariner, privateer, author, and inventor who developed parabolic reflectors for lighthouses and helped establish possibly the world's first lifeboat station. Hutchinson was a seaman by the late 1730s, serving on an East Indiaman trading in India and China. After service in the Royal Navy, he entered the employ of merchant and privateer Fortunatus Wright. Hutchinson was captured by the French in 1746 in the ''Perl'', but by 1748 was master of the ''St. George'', which captured a French ship. A voyage in 1750 as captain of Wright's ''Lowestoft'' ended in shipwreck, and Hutchinson later claimed that only a timely rescue saved him from being eaten by the survivors in his lifeboat, as he had drawn the short straw. Fortunatus Wright
Fortunatus Wright (c.1712–1757) was a British merchant and privateer, notable for his activities in the Mediterranean Sea during the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. Early life Wright was apparently a native of Wallasey in Cheshire, England, the son of master mariner and ship owner John Wright (d. 1717). After going to sea as a boy, he settled down as a brewer and distiller and married Martha Painter in 1732. They had several children, including a daughter, Philippa. His wife died shortly after Philippa's birth, and in 1736 Wright married Mary Bulkeley, a daughter of William Bulkeley of Anglesey. Their daughter Ann was born the next year. 12-pounder Long Gun
The 12-pounder long gun was an intermediary calibre piece of artillery mounted on warships of the Age of sail. They were used as main guns on the most typical frigates of the early 18th century, on the second deck of fourth-rate ships of the line, and on the upper decks or castles of 80-gun and 120-gun ships of the line. Naval 12-pounders were similar to 12-pound Army guns in the Gribeauval system: the canon lourd de 12 Gribeauval, used as a siege weapon, and the canon de 12 Gribeauval, which was considered a heavy field artillery piece. Builder's Old Measurement (BOM, bm, OM, and o.m.) is the method used in England from approximately 1650 to 1849 for calculating the cargo capacity of a ship. It is a volumetric measurement of cubic capacity. It estimated the tonnage of a ship based on length and maximum beam. It is expressed in "tons burden" ( en-em , burthen , enm , byrthen ), and abbreviated "tons bm". The formula is: : \text = \frac where: * ''Length'' is the length, in feet, from the stem to the sternpost; * ''Beam'' is the maximum beam, in feet. The Builder's Old Measurement formula remained in effect until the advent of steam propulsion. English Coffeehouses In The 17th And 18th Centuries
English coffeehouses in the 17th and 18th centuries were public social places where men would meet for conversation and commerce. For the price of a penny, customers purchased a cup of coffee and admission. Travellers introduced coffee as a beverage to England during the mid-17th century; previously it had been consumed mainly for its supposed medicinal properties. Coffeehouses also served tea and hot chocolate as well as a light meal.
