Reggae
Reggae () is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The term also denotes the modern popular music of Jamaica and its diaspora. A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, " Do the Reggay" was the first popular song to use the word "reggae", effectively naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. The album peaked at No. 10 on ''Billboards Reggae Albums chart. Production The title track is thought to be a polemic about the rise of dancehall music. "Play Jerry" is a tribute to Jerry Garcia. Critical reception ''The Washington Post'' wrote that "the reggae ... is typically swirling and hypnotic, but this is first and foremost message music." ''The Boston Globe'' thought that "the formula is simple: mesmerizing bass lines, snappy horns and Spear's own time-worn voice, reflecting conscious themes and Pan-African concerns." Burning Spear supported the album with a North American tour. Production The album was produced by Winston Rodney and Nelson Miller. Critical reception ''Newsday'' noted that "the roots of Spear's heavily rhythmic and deeply spiritual music lie in the insistent patterns of Jamaica's Nyabinghi drummers, which Spear's Burning Band translates into solid drumming and playfully ornamental percussion." ''The Gazette'' deemed the album "embarrassingly short on substance and originality." The ''Los Angeles Times'' wrote: "This consummately crafted collection features taut, muscular riddims, contemporary keyboard swirls and strong, jazzy horn lines behind Spear's inimitable village-elder voice delivering love songs and his perennial theme of personal identity." Track listing #"The World Shou ...

''The Washington Post'' determined that, "pared down to the essentials, the arrangements generally mirror Rodney's economical phrasing, and if they're missing some of the grittiness that characterizes his singing (and some of his lyrics), at least the gloss isn't insufferably thick." ''The Gazette'' opined that the album "is crisply produced, pleasant enough and the band is hard at work, but the singer seems disinterested." The ''Boston Herald'' noted Rodney's "ability t ...
