Ocean Colour Scene
Ocean Colour Scene (often abbreviated to OCS) are an English Rock music, rock band formed in Solihull in 1989. They have had five top 10 albums including a number one in 1997. They have also achieved seventeen top 40 singles and six top 10 singles to date. History Early days (1990–1995) Ocean Colour Scene were formed after two other bands called The Boys and Fanatics disbanded. Fanatics released an Extended play, EP titled ''Suburban Love Songs''. OCS signed to Phfftt Records in 1990. Their first single, "Sway", was released in September 1990 during the indie (music), indie era. When their record label was swallowed up by larger company Phonogram Records, Phonogram their eponymous début album was remixed, against the band's wishes, to fit in with the Baggy/indie-dance musical trend of the time. ''Saturday'' is the ninth studio album by Ocean Colour Scene and first album by the band to be released on the Cooking Vinyl independent record label. The album was produced by Gavin Monaghan, who is also known for his work with Editors, Scott Matthews, Nizlopi and The Twang and engineered by Gazz Rogers. Saturday previously had the working title of 'Blue Sky Drinking' which was changed to 'Rockfield' and again shortly before its release to its eventual name of 'Saturday'. The first single to be released from the album was 'Magic Carpet Days' as a digital download only single, the single failed to chart. Upon its release ''Saturday'' débuted and peaked at #35 in the Official UK Album Chart. Moseley Shoals Records is an independent record label in the United Kingdom. The company was set up by British rock band Ocean Colour Scene in 2004, so that they could release their '' Live Acoustic at the Jam House'' album. The name Moseley Shoals is taken from their breakthrough second album ''Moseley Shoals''. Moseley is an area of Birmingham where the band formed, and they named their recording studio Moseley Shoals in deference to Muscle Shoals Sound recording studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. ''On the Leyline'' is the eighth studio album by Ocean Colour Scene. It was released on 30 April 2007 and entered the UK album charts on 6 May 2007, peaking at No.37, lasting only a single week in the top 75. Releases The album contains a Paul Weller song entitled "For Dancers Only" (later released by Weller and Graham Coxon under the name "This Old Town"). The fourth track ("Man in the Middle"), was written by the band's bass guitarist, Dan Sealey. The first single, " I Told You So", was released two weeks before the album release on 16 April and reached number 34 in the UK singles charts. The second single released from the album was "I Just Got Over You" which entered and peaked at number 112 following little attention from the music press. ''A Hyperactive Workout for the Flying Squad'' is the seventh studio album by English rock band Ocean Colour Scene. It was originally due to be released in September 2004 but Sanctuary Records requested the band record a live album instead and it was eventually released on 21 March 2005. The album was produced by Dave Eringa and recorded at a hunting lodge near Kirriemuir, Scotland. The album's unusual title was a phrase the band heard on BBC Radio 4 and decided they liked. Critical reception to the album generally agreed that the album would please Ocean Colour Scene fans, although the album charted lower than previous albums at number 30 in the UK album chart compared to number 14 for the previous album ''North Atlantic Drift''. Sanctuary Records Group Limited was a record label based in the United Kingdom and is as of 2013 a subsidiary of BMG Rights Management solely for reissues. Until June 2007, it was the largest independent record label in the UK and the largest music management company in the world. It was also the world's largest independent owner of music intellectual property rights, with over 160,000 songs. History The company was formed in 1979 by Rod Smallwood and Andy Taylor, who met as undergraduates at Trinity College, Cambridge. ''North Atlantic Drift'' is the sixth studio album by British rock band Ocean Colour Scene. Background Martin 'Max' Hayes and the band co-produced every song, except for "For Every Corner", which was produced solely by the former. They were assisted by Tim Roe (who also did additional engineering on "When Evil Comes"), Darren, Nash, Darren Blackwell, and Tom Webster. Hayes and Pete Craigie mixed the recordings. Composition Musically, the sound of ''North Atlantic Drift'' has been described as blues rock. The opening track "I Just Need Myself" is done in the style of the Faces, with percussion from Steve White. "Oh Collector" features guitar contributions from Kevin Rowe. The title track is political commentary on American cultural imperialism and its support by the UK government, particularly the then impending US-led invasion of Iraq, which was opposed by the majority of the British public. Mechanical Wonder
''Mechanical Wonder'' is the fifth album by Ocean Colour Scene. It peaked on the UK album chart at #7 and lasted four weeks in the top 75. To date, it is the last Ocean Colour Scene release to enter the top 10. The title is believed to be anti-dance music, as are the lyrics; "the Mechanical Wonder is... ...just a noise in my room." However, the band deny this. Simon Fowler wrote in the liner notes of the band's greatest hits album " Songs for the Front Row" that the title referred to cars on the motorway. Live however, Simon Fowler often sings "and the radio plays only fucking Radio 1", a possible reference to the lack of airplay the band get. The other single from the album was "Up on the Downside", which fared better in the charts. The album was not a success, marking the end of the Britpop success of the band. ''One from the Modern'' is the fourth album by Ocean Colour Scene. The album made a departure from the two previous albums ''Moseley Shoals'' and '' Marchin' Already'', and is slower and sadder. It was panned by critics who accused it of being too commercial and labelled it "dad rock". The album was dismissed by David Belcher of '' The Herald'', who commented on its "strangled vocals" and "cringe-worthy lyrics." Nicholas Barber writing for ''The Independent'' concurred saying: "Much of the blame must rest on Simon Fowler. His mangled vocals and nonsense lyrics suggest that he doesn't know what it is he wants to communicate." The protest song "Profit in Peace" was the first single, with "So Low" and then a double release of "I Am the News"/"July". The song "Soul Driver" is dedicated to Paul Weller, who mentored the band. Marchin' Already
''Marchin' Already'' is the third album by Ocean Colour Scene. The album was a follow-up to the successful ''Moseley Shoals'', and is in a similar style. The songs were taken from the band's catalogue that they had built up since forming several years earlier. The single "Hundred Mile High City" was used in the film ''Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels''. P.P. Arnold appears on "Traveller's Tune" and "It's a Beautiful Thing". A more subdued version of "Traveller's Tune" originally appeared as a B-side to "The Day We Caught the Train". The album knocked Oasis' '' Be Here Now'' off the top spot in the UK Albums Chart—Noel Gallagher sent Ocean Colour Scene his congratulations through a plaque on which he had inscribed, "To The Second Best Band In Britain". Steve Cradock famously retorted "it's an honour to be described as Britain's second best band, ahead of Oasis but behind the Beatles".
