Live At Last (Maghostut Trio Album)
''Live at Last'' is a live album by the Maghostut Trio: double bassist and leader Malachi Favors Maghostut, multi-instrumentalist Hanah Jon Taylor, and percussionist Vincent Davis. Five of the album's tracks were recorded on October 10, 2003, several months before Favors' death, at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, while the remaining track was recorded six days later at the Velvet Lounge in Chicago, Illinois. The album was released on CD in 2006 by RogueArt. Reception In a review for AllMusic, Alain Drouot wrote: "Fans of the bassist will enjoy his rich sound and intricate rhythms... the set hints at what the trio could have achieved should it have had the chance to grow and remains a valuable document for anyone with an interest in jazz made in Chicago." Velvet Lounge
The Velvet Lounge was a nightclub in the South Loop of Chicago. It started as a jazz club and was called the "dusty epicenter of the Midwest's free form jazz scene." It was located at 2128 1/2 S. Indiana Avenue before moving to 67 E. Cermak when the original building was scheduled for demolition. It closed permanently in 2019. History The club was established in 1983 by jazz saxophonist Fred Anderson who owned the business until his death in 2010. Many live albums were recorded at the club, including a series of performances featuring Anderson himself, on the Delmark label, and 1998's ''Live at the Velvet Lounge'' with Anderson, Peter Kowald, and Hamid Drake. Free jazz is an experimental approach to jazz improvisation that developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s when musicians attempted to change or break down jazz conventions, such as regular tempos, tones, and chord changes. RogueArt (also written Rogueart and Rogue Art) is a French independent record label based in Paris. It was founded by record producer Michel Dorbon in 2005 and specialises in jazz and improvised music. History RogueArt was founded by record producer Michel Dorbon in 2005, and its first release was the album, ''Bindu'' by jazz percussionist Hamid Drake. In the 1960s and 1970s, Dorbon listened to rock groups like Cream, Soft Machine and Henry Cow because of their use of improvisation. Malachi Favors
Malachi Favors (August 22, 1927 – January 30, 2004) was an American jazz bassist who played with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Biography "Favors's tendency to dissemble about his age was a well-known source of mirth to fellow musicians of his generation". Most reference works give his year of birth of 1937, but, following his death, his daughter stated that it was 1927. Favors primarily played the double bass, but also played the electric bass guitar, banjo, zither, gong, and other instruments. He began playing double bass at the age of 15 and began performing professionally upon graduating from high school. Early performances included work with Dizzy Gillespie and Freddie Hubbard. By 1965, he was a founder of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and a member of Muhal Richard Abrams' Experimental Band.
