Live Skull
Live Skull is a post-punk/experimental rock band from New York City, formed in 1982. In an overview of their abrasive no wave-influenced music, ''Trouser Press'' said, "As part of the same New York avant-noisy scene that spawned Sonic Youth, Lydia Lunch, and Swans, Live Skull records come complete with creepy lyrics, circular melodies and nod-out drum beats designed to lull you into their macabre world". History Live Skull formed in downtown New York City in 1982, founded by tandem guitarists Mark C. and Tom Paine (birth name: Lance Goldenberg). Both had previously been members of San Francisco band ''Crop'' along with brothers Ivan and Andrew Nahem (later of '' Ritual Tension''), before moving to New York in 1980. Come (American Band)
Come is an American alternative rock band, formed in Boston by Thalia Zedek (vocals, guitar), Chris Brokaw (guitar, vocals), Arthur Johnson (drums), and Sean O'Brien (bass). Band history Come came into being after a mutual acquaintance invited Brokaw, O'Brien, and Johnson to play with him. Brokaw was playing drums with Codeine, Johnson had previously drummed for Athens, Georgia band Bar-B-Q Killers, and O'Brien had played with two other 1980s Athens bands, Kilkenny Cats and Fashion Battery. After playing one show together, Brokaw, O'Brien, and Johnson decided to split off into their own project and invited Thalia Zedek to join them. Zedek had played in the bands Uzi and Dangerous Birds and had met and befriended Brokaw in the mid-1980s. Trouser Press
''Trouser Press'' was a rock and roll magazine started in New York in 1974 as a mimeographed fanzine by editor/publisher Ira Robbins, fellow fan of the Who Dave Schulps and Karen Rose under the name "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press" (a reference to a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and an acronymic play on the British TV show ''Top of the Pops)''. Publication of the magazine ceased in 1984. The unexpired portion of mail subscriptions was completed by ''Rolling Stone'' sister publication ''Record'', which itself folded in 1985. ''Trouser Press'' has continued to exist in various formats. History The magazine's original scope was British bands and artists (early issues featured the slogan "America's Only British Rock Magazine"). Post-punk
Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of punk music that emerged in the late 1970s as musicians departed from punk's traditional elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Inspired by punk's energy and DIY ethic but determined to break from rock cliches, artists experimented with styles like funk, electronic music, jazz, and dance music; the production techniques of dub and disco; and ideas from art and politics, including critical theory, modernist art, cinema and literature. These communities produced independent record labels, visual art, multimedia performances and fanzines. Dan Braun
Dan Braun (born circa 1962) is an American musician, composer, writer, editor, art director, and film producer. Early music career Dan Braun and his twin brother Josh have performed, separately and together, in bands including Circus Mort with singer Michael Gira; T-Venus (with Julia Heyward and Pat Irwin); The Del-Byzanteens (with future filmmaker Jim Jarmusch); and the Spinal Root Gang (with the future Madonna on lead vocals). After recording one EP on Labor Records in 1981, Circus Mort broke up. Braun joined with Gira in the band Swans for a short stint in 1982, and was on the album ''Body to Body, Job to Job'' (1991). He went on to play with a myriad of New York bands and musicians including Robin Crutchfield, performance artist Julia Heyward, composer Pat Irwin, and with producer Lefferts Brown in the band Radio Firefight. Marnie Jaffe
Marnie Jaffe () is an American singer/bassist. She was an early member of New York City noise-rock band Live Skull, and performed on its albums '' Bringing Home the Bait'' (1985), '' Cloud One'' (1986), '' Don't Get Any on You'' (1987) and '' Dusted'' (1987), and EPs ''Live Skull'' (1984), ''Pusherman'' (1986) and ''Snuffer'' (1988). She left the group in 1988. As Marnie Greenholz, she appears in the 1984 Super 8 Kiki Smith/Ellen Cooper underground film '' Cave Girls''. Jaffe also appears with fellow Live Skull member Mark C. on the Tellus cassette compilation ''Tellus No. 10 All Guitars!'', curated by Live Skull guitarist Tom Paine and released in 1985; the band collectively had previously appeared on the first and eighth volumes in the Tellus series. Shilpa Ray
Shilpa Ray is an American singer-songwriter from Brooklyn, New York with a DIY punk experimental sound. Her music has been compared to Blondie, The Cramps, and Screamin' Jay Hawkins and her singing has been compared to the style of Patti Smith, Nick Cave, and Ella Fitzgerald. Ray is notable for combining an Indian harmonium with a "big-voiced blues-rock howler" vocal approach and has been known to sing in styles ranging from metal to the balladry of Leonard Cohen. Rob Harvilla of the Village Voice once stated in 2006 that her vocal range could put the entire lineup of Ozzfest to shame. Starting as a solo performer in 2003, Ray later put together the band Beat the Devil in 2005. Rat At Rat R
Rat at Rat R was a band formed in 1981 by guitarist Victor Poison-tete. The music of Rat at Rat R can best be described as no wave guitar-oriented noise music. History Originally hailing from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, they initially relocated to Philadelphia, but the band soon relocated to New York City's Lower East Side to join the NYC noise-rock scene, with Sonic Youth, Live Skull, and Swans among their contemporaries. Phideaux Xavier (born Scott Riggs; January 14, 1963) is an American television director, and composer of modern technological music that he describes as 'psychedelic progressive gothic rock', who grew up near New York City but now lives in Los Angeles. Early life Phideaux was born Scott Riggs on January 14, 1963 in Hastings-on-Hudson, one of three children. He started composing music in high school. Lubricated Goat are an Australian noise rock band which originally formed in 1986 by multi-instrumentalist Stu Spasm. The Hungry March Band is an American brass band with approximately 15-20 active musicians and performers. In performance, the group's size can vary from five to fifty: from a quintet to a large corps of musicians, dancers, baton twirlers, and hula hoopers.
