Live Phish 04.04.98
''Live Phish 04.04.98'' is the third night of the four-night "Island Tour", recorded live at the Providence Civic Center in Providence, Rhode Island, on April 4, 1998. The short mini-run quickly became one of the most popular Phish performances of all time, with the band mixing the funk of 1997 with the high-energy jams of the mid-1990s along with brand new compositions. The first show in Rhode Island will always be remembered for its extended jams (even "Birds of a Feather" clocked in at 15 minutes). Highlights include a heavy, energetic 18-minute "Ghost" and one of the most celebrated versions of "Harry Hood" of the late 1990s. After a 12-minute "Brother", guitarist Trey Anastasio says the band will now play the "radio friendly" version, resulting in a humorous ten-second version of the song. Funk rock is a fusion genre that mixes elements of funk and rock. "Harry Hood" is a song that is commonly performed live by the American band Phish, first released on their 1995 live album ''A Live One''. It is one of Phish's most frequently performed songs, featured in 391 live performances since its debut on October 30, 1985. Background "Harry Hood" refers to the Hood Dairy Co., a New England dairy company based in Boston. Norman Blake (American Musician)
Norman Blake (born March 10, 1938) is a traditional American stringed instrument artist and songwriter. He is half of the eponymous Norman & Nancy Blake band with his wife, Nancy Blake. Music career Early performing Blake was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and grew up in Sulphur Springs, Alabama. He listened to old-time and country music on the radio by the Carter Family, the Skillet Lickers, Roy Acuff, and the Monroe Brothers (Charlie Monroe, Charlie and Bill Monroe). He learned guitar at age 11 or 12, then mandolin, dobro, and fiddle in his teens. When he was 16, he dropped out of school to play music professionally. In the 1950s, Blake joined the Dixieland Drifters and performed on radio broadcasts, then joined the Lonesome Travelers. When he was drafted in 1961, he served as an Army radio operator in the Panama Canal Zone. He started a popular band known as the Fort Kobbe, Kobbe Mountaineers. Son Seals
Frank "Son" Seals (August 13, 1942 – December 20, 2004) was an American electric blues guitarist and singer. In 2009, Seals was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. Career Seals was born in Osceola, Arkansas, where his father, Jim "Son" Seals, owned a small juke joint, called the Dipsy Doodle Club. He began performing professionally by the age of 13, first as a drummer with Robert Nighthawk and later as a guitarist. At age 16, he began to play at the T-99, a local upper-echelon club, with his brother-in-law Walter "Little Walter" Jefferson. He played there with prominent blues musicians, including Albert King, Rufus Thomas, Bobby Bland, Junior Parker, and Rosco Gordon. Their varying styles contributed to the development of Seals's own playing techniques. While playing at the T-99, he was also introduced to country- western music by Jimmy Grubbs, who occasionally asked Seals to play the drums or guitar with his group.
