Live (Sirone Album)
''Live'' is a live album by bassist Sirone, recorded in November, 1980, at The Public Theater in New York City. It was initially released in 1981 on Sirone's label Serious Music, and was reissued in 2005 by Atavistic Records as part of their Unheard Music Series. On the album, Sirone is joined by saxophonist Claude Lawrence and drummer Dennis Charles. Reception The editors of AllMusic awarded the album 5 stars. Reviewer Michael G. Nastos called it "potent, creative music." The authors of the ''Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings'' wrote: "Sirone's deep, bluesy tone and background in horn-playing are evident... Charles and Lawrence are largely present to set up ideas and improvising contexts... it's his bass playing that is most revelatory, rich and resonant sounds and some nimbly inventive ideas." Sirone (musician)
Norris Jones, better known as Sirone (September 28, 1940 Sirone biography AllMusic – October 21, 2009) was an American jazz bassist and composer. Biography Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Sirone worked in Atlanta late in the 1950s and early in the 1960s with "The Group" alongside George Adams; he also recorded with R&B musicians such as Sam Cooke and Smokey Robinson. In 1966, in response to a call from Marion Brown, he moved to New York City, where he co-founded the "Untraditional Jazz Improvisational Team" with Dave Burrell. He also worked with Brown, Gato Barbieri, Pharoah Sanders, Noah Howard, Sonny Sharrock, Sunny Murray, Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, and Sun Ra, as well as with John Coltrane when he was near the end of his career. He co-founded the Revolutionary Ensemble with Leroy Jenkins and Frank Clayton in 1971; Jerome Cooper later replaced Clayton in the ensemble, which was active for much of the decade. Free Jazz
Free jazz is an experimental approach to jazz improvisation that developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s when musicians attempted to change or break down jazz conventions, such as regular tempos, tones, and chord changes. Musicians during this period believed that the bebop, hard bop, and modal jazz that had been played before them was too limiting. They became preoccupied with creating something new and exploring new directions. The term "free jazz" has often been combined with or substituted for the term "avant-garde jazz". Europeans tend to favor the term "free improvisation". Others have used "modern jazz", "creative music", and "art music". The ambiguity of free jazz presents problems of definition. Atavistic Records
Atavistic Records is an American record label based in Chicago, Illinois, known for its no wave and free jazz recordings. Atavistic has released albums by Glenn Branca, Nels Cline, Lydia Lunch, Peter Brötzmann, Ken Vandermark, Pinetop Seven, Swans, Elliott Sharp, Larry Ochs, Mars, Davey Williams, Brian Harnetty, Zeena Parkins, and Poem Rocket, among others. The label was founded in Columbus, Ohio in 1985 by Kurt Kellison as a video label producing live VHS recordings by bands such as Live Skull and The Flaming Lips. Sirone's Concord
''Sirone's Concord'' is an album by bassist Sirone, his second as a leader. It was recorded in June, 2003, at Das Tonstudio 24 in Berlin, and was released later that year by Not Two Records. On the album, Sirone is joined by saxophonist Ben Abarbanel-Wolff, violinist Ulli Bartel, and drummer Maurice de Martin. ''Sirone's Concord'' was the bassist's first album under his own name in over 23 years, his previous release being '' Artistry'' (Of The Cosmos, 1979). Reception In a review for ''Paris Transatlantic'', Dan Warburton stated that "one wonders why on earth we didn't hear more of" Sirone since his previous release as a leader, and wrote that the playing on the album is "solid and convincing without being flashy." ''Configuration'' is a live album by bassist Sirone and violinist Billy Bang, recorded in November, 2004, at CBGB's Gallery in New York City, and released in 2005 by Silkheart Records. On the album, the musicians are joined by the members of the Sirone Bang Ensemble: saxophonist Charles Gayle and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. Reception The authors of the ''Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings'' wrote: "The interplay between Bang and Sirone is as fascinating as you'd expect given their shared and several experience and the closeness of their instruments." They praised the contribution of Sorey, who was 22 at the time of the recording, stating that, by the second track, he gives "the three veterans something to think about." Unheard Music Series
The Unheard Music Series is an imprint of the American record label Atavistic Records. The series, running since 2000, is curated by Chicago writer and producer John Corbett and focuses mainly on free jazz recordings from the 1960s and 1970s. The series includes reissues of previously out-of-print recordings, notably from the catalog of the German label FMP, and also incorporates previously unreleased material. The project was conceived after Corbett received a fellowship to research material in German radio archives. Denis Charles
Denis Alphonso Charles (December 4, 1933 – March 26, 1998) was a jazz drummer. Biography Charles was born in St. Croix, Virgin Islands, and first played bongos at age seven with local ensembles in the Virgin Islands. In 1945, he moved to New York, and gigged frequently around town. In 1954, he began working with Cecil Taylor, and the pair collaborated until 1958. Following this he played with Steve Lacy, Gil Evans, and Jimmy Giuffre. He befriended Ed Blackwell, and the two influenced each other. He recorded with Sonny Rollins on a calypso-tinged set, and then returned to time with Lacy, with whom he played until 1964. He worked with Archie Shepp and Don Cherry in 1967, but heroin addiction saw him leave the record industry until 1971. In the 1970s and 1980s, he played regularly on the New York jazz scene with Frank Lowe, David Murray, Charles Tyler, Billy Bang, and others, and also played funk, rock, and traditional Caribbean music. ''All About Jazz'' is a website established by Michael Ricci in 1995. A volunteer staff publishes news, album reviews, articles, videos, and listings of concerts and other events having to do with jazz. Ricci maintains a related site, ''Jazz Near You'', about local concerts and events. The Jazz Journalists Association voted ''All About Jazz'' Best Website Covering Jazz for thirteen consecutive years between 2003 and 2015, when the category was retired. In 2015, Ricci said the site received a peak of 1.3 million readers per month in 2007. Another source said that the site has over 500,000 readers around the world. Ricci was born in Philadelphia.
