Locomotive Depot
The motive power depot (MPD) or locomotive depot, or traction maintenance depot (TMD), is the place where locomotives are usually housed, repaired and maintained when not being used. They were originally known as "running sheds", "engine sheds" or, for short, just sheds. Facilities are provided for refuelling and replenishing water, lubricating oil and grease and, for steam engines, disposal of the ash. There are often workshops for day to day repairs and maintenance, although locomotive building and major overhauls are usually carried out in the locomotive works. The China Railways KD7 type steam locomotive was a type of 2-8-0 mainline general purpose steam locomotive. KD7 locomotives were built in the United States and supplied to China by UNRRA as part of the post war rehabilitation effort in 1946. China received 160 locos while others of the same design went to Belgium as NMBS/SNCB Type 29. At least four KD7s are thought to have been preserved. The China Railways JF11 (解放11, Jiěfàng, "liberation") class steam locomotive was a class of 2-8-2 steam locomotives operated by the China Railway. History Originally built for the Jinpu Railway and the Zhegan Railway by ALCO and the Baldwin Locomotive Works in the United States in 1918–1937. The Jinpu Railway designated these MK class, received two deliveries, with the first 30 arriving from ALCo between 1918 and 1920. From 1938 to 1945 they were operated by the North China Transportation Company, which grouped them in the Mikana (ミカナ) class. Those that were delivered to the Zhegan Railway were operated by the Central China Railway during the Japanese occupation. The China Railways FD class of locomotives were 2-10-2 steam locomotives of the Russian FD locomotive type imported from Russia and regauged for use in China. History The FD class locomotives were imported from Russia from 1958 to provide main line freight motive power for the Chinese railways. Over 1000 units were acquired and remained in service until 1985. When imported the class were designated ''YH'' (''YouHao'' meaning 'friendship'), but after the breakdown of Sino-Soviet relations during the Cultural Revolution (see Sino–Soviet split) the class were renamed ''FX'' (''FanXiu'' meaning ' anti-revisionist').
