Little River State Beach
Little River State Beach is a protected beach of California, United States, in Humboldt County. It is located at the mouth of the Little River, north of Eureka right off U.S. Route 101. The park was established in 1931. The site is a broad, open beach that contains sand dunes. The Little River forms the north boundary of the beach. It is open for day-use only, but the adjacent Clam Beach County Park provides camping. Van Damme State Park
Van Damme State Park is a public beach consisting of about of land in Mendocino County, California, near the town of Little River on State Route 1. It was named for Charles F. Van Damme (1881–1934), who was born in the area and purchased the land that is now the park with profits from a San Francisco ferry business. On his death, the property became part of the California state park system. Description The greater part of the park lies on the inland side of State Route 1 and includes ten miles of hiking trails along the Little River and campsites rated by the ''Guardian'' as one of the ten best on the West Coast. On the ocean side of the highway, a free parking lot provides access to Little River Beach at the mouth of the Little River, also part of the park. Humboldt County () is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 136,463. The county seat is Eureka. McKinleyville (formerly Minorsville) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Humboldt County, California McKinleyville is located north of Arcata, at an elevation of . The population was 15,177 at the 2010 census, up from 13,599 at the time of the 2000 census. This unincorporated community is the third largest community, after Eureka and Arcata, on the far North Coast. Little River (Humboldt County)
The Little River is the river in the U.S. state of California, whose drainage basin is the largest on the Pacific coast between the Mad River and Big Lagoon. The river drains the forested Franciscan assemblage of the California Coast Ranges. The lowermost mile of channel is through Quaternary alluvium and dune sand of an estuarine floodplain typical of coastal inlets along the Cascadia subduction zone. Land seaward of U.S. Route 101 forms Little River State Beach and Clam Beach County Park. Little River State Park was established in 1931. The floodplain upstream of the Highway 101 bridge is cleared as grazing pasture, and the upland portion of the drainage basin, including the former company town of Crannell, is in private ownership growing forest products. A dune is a landform composed of wind- or water-driven sand. It typically takes the form of a mound, ridge, or hill. An area with dunes is called a dune system or a dune complex. A large dune complex is called a dune field, while broad, flat regions covered with wind-swept sand or dunes with little or no vegetation are called ''ergs'' or ''sand seas''. Dunes occur in different shapes and sizes, but most kinds of dunes are longer on the stoss (upflow) side, where the sand is pushed up the dune, and have a shorter ''slip face'' in the lee side.
