Little Orphan Annie (radio)
''Little Orphan Annie'' is an American radio drama series based on the popularity of the comic strip '' Little Orphan Annie''. It debuted on Chicago's WGN in 1930, then moved to the NBC radio network Blue Network on April 6, 1931. It aired until April 26, 1942. Together with '' Skippy'' (1932–1935) it is seen as the oldest US children's radio program. Radio historian Jim Harmon attributes the show's popularity in ''The Great Radio Heroes'' to the fact that it was the only radio show to deal with and appeal to young children. Concept ''Little Orphan Annie'' was based on Harold Gray's eponymous and equally popular comic strip series '' Little Orphan Annie''. The show debuted on WGN/Chicago in 1930, but only became a national hit when it moved to NBC radio's Blue Network in 1931. It was broadcast in the late afternoon and ran for twelve successful years. NBC Radio
The National Broadcasting Company's NBC Radio Network (known as the NBC Red Network prior to 1942) was an American commercial radio network which was in operation from 1926 through 2004. Along with the NBC Blue Network it was one of the first two nationwide networks established in the United States. Its major competitors were the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), founded in 1927, and the Mutual Broadcasting System, founded in 1934. In 1942, NBC was required to divest one of its national networks, so it sold NBC Blue, which was soon renamed the American Broadcasting Company (ABC). After this separation the Red Network continued as the ''NBC Radio Network''. In 1987 NBC sold its remaining radio network operations to Westwood One, which continued using NBC identification for some of its programming until 2014. Mel Tormé
Melvin Howard Tormé (September 13, 1925 – June 5, 1999), nicknamed "The Velvet Fog", was an American musician, singer, composer, arranger, drummer, actor, and author. He composed the music for "The Christmas Song" ("Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire") and co-wrote the lyrics with Bob Wells. Early life Melvin Howard Tormé was born in Chicago, Illinois, to William David Torme, a Jewish immigrant from Poland, and Betty Torme (née Sopkin), a New York City native. He graduated from Hyde Park High School. A child prodigy, he first performed professionally at age four with the Coon-Sanders Orchestra, singing "You're Driving Me Crazy" at Chicago's Blackhawk restaurant. He played drums in the drum-and-bugle corps at Shakespeare Elementary School. Henry Saxe
Henry Saxe (born September 24, 1937) is a Canadian artist who creates sculpture, painting and drawing. Career Born in Montreal, Quebec, Saxe attended Sir George Williams University (1955-1956) and the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal (1956-1961), then studied printmaking with Albert Dumouchel (1960-1961). Saxe made his first sculpture in 1965. He continued printmaking in London (1967-1968). He taught at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal (1968-1969) and at the École des arts visuels de l'Université Laval (1970-1973). His work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including at the Biennale de Paris in 1963 and 1968, as well as the ''Cent jours d’art contemporain de Montréal'', in 1985. Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks is a fictional character from the comic strip '' Little Orphan Annie''. He made his first appearance in the New York ''Daily News'' in the ''Annie'' strip on September 27, 1924. In the series he is said to be around 52 years of age. Biography Childhood Warbucks was born about 1894, near the fictional small town of Supine. (In Thomas Meehan's 1980 novelisation of his 1977 musical, he was born and brought up in Hell's Kitchen, New York, and is 52 years old as of 1933, thus giving him a birthdate of 1881.
