Little Missouri National Grassland
Little Missouri National Grassland is a National Grassland located in western North Dakota, USA. At , it is the largest grassland in the country. Enclaved within its borders is Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which is managed by the National Park Service (and therefore not included in the preceding statistics). The Little Missouri National Grassland was once a part of the Custer National Forest, but is now a part of the Dakota Prairie Grasslands, a National Forest unit consisting entirely of National Grasslands. A predominant feature of the grassland is colorful and beautiful badlands, a rugged terrain extensively eroded by wind and water. It is a mixed grass prairie, meaning it has both long and short grass. The boundaries of the grasslands on certain maps can be misleading. White Butte
White Butte is the highest natural point in the U.S. state of North Dakota. At an elevation of 3,506 ft (1,069 m), it is a prominent butte in Slope County, in the Badlands of the southwestern part of the state. It is located east of U.S. 85 and about south of Amidon. The nearest town is Amidon, about seven miles to the northwest. The summit is located within the boundaries of the Little Missouri National Grassland and is about south of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It is on private property, owned by the Dennis family who live nearby. At the parking area, one mile due north of the trailhead, the family maintains a small mailbox-like receptacle for donations to help maintain the area, and requests a $5 contribution from visitors. Yule Ranch
Yule Ranch (now Three V Ranch) is a historic property in Golden Valley and Slope counties in North Dakota, United States. Background Founded in 1883 by John Pender as the JXL Ranch or Yule Ranch, historically the ranch was a multi-state cattle operation. After changing hands it was renamed as the VVV Ranch in 1937. The VVV brand had previously been established in 1898 at another ranch. At one time it was home to a small community including a post office bearing the name Yule, a general store, and a stage coach stop. The post office closed in 1910. Today the ranch raises Angus cattle, grows cash crops, and caters to hunters looking for mule and whitetail deer, coyotes and sharptail grouse. Initial Rock
Initial Rock, also known as Name Rock, in the Medora Ranger District of the Little Missouri National Grassland, near Medora, North Dakota, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1976. It was the site of an overnight camp on May 28, 1876 of George Armstrong Custer's men, on their way to the Battle of Little Big Horn, which happened on June 25, 1876. The NRHP listing included one contributing site and one contributing object on . Two soldiers, W.C. Williams and F. Neely, carved their names in a rock still present at the site.
