Locust, North Carolina
Locust is a small rural city in Stanly and Cabarrus counties in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 2,930 at the 2010 census. Geography Locust is located in southwestern Stanly County at (35.267185, -80.426805). Through annexations, the city limits now extend west into Cabarrus County. Locust is bordered by the town of Stanfield to the south. The center of Locust is at the intersection of combined North Carolina Highway 24/ 27 with North Carolina Highway 200. NC 24/27 leads east to Albemarle and west to the Charlotte area. Via NC 27 it is to the Charlotte center city. NC 200 leads northwest to US 601 and provides a route to Concord, away, and leads southwest to Monroe. Pee Dee River
The Pee Dee River, also known as the Great Pee Dee River, is a river in the Carolinas of the United States. It originates in the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina, where its upper course, above the mouth of the Uwharrie River, is known as the Yadkin River. The river empties into Winyah Bay, and then into the Atlantic Ocean near Georgetown. The northeastern counties of South Carolina compose the Pee Dee region of the state. The exposed rock formations along its course are the source of a NIST reference standard. It is an important source of electric power and public water supplies, as well as recreational use. Winyah Bay
The Winyaw were a Native American tribe living near Winyah Bay, Black River, and the lower course of the Pee Dee River in South Carolina. The Winyaw people disappeared as a distinct entity after 1720 and are thought to have merged with the Waccamaw. Name The meaning of the name ''Winyaw'' is unknown. Winyaw has also been written as Winyah, Weenee, and Wineaw. History The Winyaw might have been the Yenyohol mentioned in 1521 by Francisco de Chicora, a Native American captive held by the Spanish. If so, they may have been carried away during Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón's expedition during that same year. The Winyaw were first mentioned by colonists of South Carolina after 1670. The tribe at first allied with the English colonists who settled in Charles Town, but this friendship soon was shattered when European slave dealers instigated a war against them in 1683 as an excuse to capture slaves.
