Little Houghton, Northamptonshire
Little Houghton is a village and civil parish in Northamptonshire, England, located about east of Northampton. At the time of the United Kingdom Census 2001, 2001 census, the parish's population was 367 people, increasing to 412 at the 2011 census. Just off the A428 road, A428 road between Bedford and Northampton, the village overlooks old gravel pits, (now converted to reservoirs) and a canal. Just across the valley is Billing Aquadrome. In the village is Little Houghton House a Grade II-Listed Manor House with roots back to 1685. To the north at Clifford Hill by the river Nene is the surviving motte of Little Houghton Castle. Little Houghton, South Yorkshire
Little Houghton is a hamlet and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. At the 2001 census it had a population of 618, increasing to 659 at the 2011 Census. Access to the hamlet of Little Houghton is gained by travelling along Middlecliff Lane through the village of Middlecliffe. The larger village is made up of mainly council and ex-council houses. Little Houghton was previously the site of two large coal mines. Houghton Main was a deep shaft mine and Dearne Valley a drift mine. Both mines are now closed and their sites have been landscaped, which has been partly funded by money from the European Union. Before the coal mines, the village was involved in agriculture and there were a number of farms in the village with associated cottages. Only two of the old farm buildings remain, but some have recently been converted into housing. The two settlements come under Little Houghton Parish Council. Little Houghton House
Little Houghton House is a Grade II*-listed, nineteenth century Manor House with parts going back to 1685. The house has been owned by notable people, including Cecil Davidge and Christopher Davidge, both of whom served as High Sheriff of Northamptonshire and Deputy Lieutenants of Northamptonshire. History Little Houghton House was built initially in 1685 as a summerhouse for the Ward Family following their support for James II of England. The Ward family owned it continuously until the 1800s when Christopher Smyth bought the House from the last remaining Wards living at the house for his nephew William Tyler Smyth. Smyth was a descendant of the Smyths of Elkington Hall who had settled at that house since the middle 14th Century. Smyth renovated and enlarged the house in 1825 making it a north-east park facing house, using Kingsthorpe stone and stone from Horton Hall.
