Little Cornard Derailment
The Little Cornard derailment occurred on 17 August 2010 when a passenger train collided with a road vehicle on a level crossing on the Gainsborough Line near Little Cornard, Suffolk, and partly derailed. The vehicle, a tanker lorry, had begun crossing over the track when the train from destined for struck it whilst travelling at a speed of approximately . Twenty-three people aboard the train were injured, five of them seriously, including the driver. The lorry driver was subsequently jailed and disqualified from driving for causing the accident, after he admitted to having not used the crossing telephone to obtain permission from the signaller to cross the railway. Little Cornard
Little Cornard is a village and civil parish in Suffolk, England. Located around from its larger sibling, Great Cornard, on the B1508 road between Sudbury and Colchester, it is part of Babergh district, and has a population of 305, reducing to 286 at the 2011 Census. The parish also includes the hamlet of Workhouse Green. The parish's eastern boundary is the River Stour (also Suffolk's border with Essex). The parish is also home to the Cornard Mere Site of Special Scientific Interest, and the Appletree Wood and Mumford Wood wildlife sites. Church All Saints Church is a small flint and brick church of the C14 and Cl5. Standing isolated in fields, it is a Grade I listed building. There are six bells hanging in the tower, the oldest two were cast in 1399 and 1597, three were cast around the 1700s, and the sixth bell was newly cast during a restoration process in 2018. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) is a British government agency that independently investigates rail accidents in the United Kingdom and the Channel Tunnel in order to find a cause, not to lay blame.
