Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum
The Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum is an industrial museum in Lithgow, New South Wales. It is located on the original Commonwealth Small Arms Factory site and houses archives dating back to the founding of the factory in 1912, as well as a large number of historical small arms and artefacts related to the operation of the original Lithgow Small Arms Factory. It was officially opened on the 15th of October 1998, after a number of former employees of the Lithgow Small Arms Factory objected to the privatisation of the former Factory property. Lithgow, New South Wales
Lithgow is a town in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia and is the administrative center of the City of Lithgow local government area. It is located in a mountain valley named Lithgow's Valley by John Oxley in honour of William Lithgow, the first Auditor-General of New South Wales. Lithgow is on the Great Western Highway, about west of Sydney, or via the old mountain route, Bells Line of Road, from Windsor. At June 2021 Lithgow had an estimated urban population of 21,556. Lithgow Small Arms Factory
The Lithgow Small Arms Factory, or Lithgow Arms, is an Australian small arms manufacturing factory located in the town of Lithgow, New South Wales. It was created by the Australian Government in 1912 to ease reliance on the British for the supply of defence materials. History Opened on 8 June 1912, the factory initially manufactured SMLE III rifles (and Pattern 1907 bayonets) for the Australian military during World War I. During World War II, production expanded to include Vickers machine guns, Bren guns and, postwar, branched out into sporting goods (including civilian firearms and golf clubs), tools, sewing machines, (from the mid-1950s) the F1 submachine gun, L1A1 SLR, KAL1 general purpose infantry rifle prototypes and similar products.
