Lithgow Mercury
The ''Lithgow Mercury'', is a tri-weekly English language newspaper first published in 1878 in Lithgow, New South Wales, Australia. History The ''Lithgow Mercury'' was established in 1878. Initially a weekly publication, the paper was published daily from 1949 to 1986, then tri-weekly. In 1879, the paper was purchased by Walter Scott Targett, who had started work as a compositor on the paper, and who was later elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Member for Hartley. J.P.T. Caulfield acquired the paper in 1886. He worked as editor for eighteen months, until late 1887 when he sold the paper to the proprietors of the ''Lithgow Enterprise and Australian Land Nationaliser''. In January 1889, the Lithgow Mercury Newspaper Co., headed by James Ryan, purchased the business and property of the ''Lithgow Enterprise''. Lithgow, New South Wales
Lithgow is a town in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia and is the administrative center of the City of Lithgow local government area. It is located in a mountain valley named Lithgow's Valley by John Oxley in honour of William Lithgow, the first Auditor-General of New South Wales. Lithgow is on the Great Western Highway, about west of Sydney, or via the old mountain route, Bells Line of Road, from Windsor. At June 2021 Lithgow had an estimated urban population of 21,556. Walter Targett
Walter Scott Targett (1849 – 9 September 1918) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born in London to farmer David Targett and Eliza Giles. He migrated to New Zealand around 1854, then moved to Victoria around 1856, to Tasmania around 1862 and to New South Wales around 1864. On 16 September 1875 he married Emily Chapman, with whom he had ten children. He worked as a newspaper proprietor and farmer before entering politics. In 1882 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Hartley, serving until his defeat in 1887. The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. James Ryan (Australian Politician)
James Ryan (1863 – 21 June 1940) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was born in Doon in County Tipperary to farmers Patrick and Alice Ryan. He migrated to Melbourne at a young age to join his uncle, who soon died, then went to New Zealand and finally Sydney around 1884. He was an assisted road superintendent around Orange and Lithgow before becoming a journalist with the ''Lithgow Mercury''. He married schoolteacher Margaret Redmond, with whom he had three children. He was managing editor of the ''Mercury'' from 1889 to 1926. From 1917 to 1940 he was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council, first for the Nationalist Party and then for the United Australia Party. He was a minister without portfolio from 1927 to 1930, Vice-President of the Executive Council for a month in May–June 1932, and minister without portfolio again from 1932 to 1938.
