Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka (, ; si, ශ්‍රී ලංකා, Śrī Laṅkā, translit-std=ISO (); ta, இலங்கை, Ilaṅkai, translit-std=ISO ()), formerly known as Ceylon and officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island country in South Asia. It lies in the Indian Ocean, southwest of the Bay of Bengal, and southeast of the Arabian Sea; it is separated from the Indian subcontinent by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. Sri Lanka shares a maritime border with India and Maldives. Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is its legislative capital, and Colombo is its largest city and financial centre. The Governor of the North Eastern Province, Sri Lanka ( si, උතුරු සහ නැගෙනහිර පළාත් ආණ්ඩුකාරවරයා ''Uthuru saha Nægenahira palāth āndukāravarayā'') was responsible for the management of the North Eastern Provincial Council, its key functions including exercising powers vested in the Governor by the Provincial Council Act No. 42 of 1987 amended by Act No. 28 of 1990 and the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. The position was abolished in December 2006 with the demerger of the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
