Carol Liston
Carol Ann Liston is an Australian historian and academic researcher who specialises in the history of colonial New South Wales from 1788 to 1860. She is associate professor of history at Western Sydney University, in the School of Humanities and Communication Arts. Liston has a BA (1973), and a PhD (1980) from the University of Sydney. In addition to her academic commitments Liston has been president of the Royal Australian Historical Society (RAHS) on three occasions, from 1988 to 1992, in 2002 and from 2014 to 2018. In 2019 she is senior vice president. She has been a councillor of the RAHS since 1983. She is also a member of the Professional Historians Association NSW & ACT. Liston is also president of the board of the Biographical Database of Australia (BDA), a genealogical project which is transcribing, indexing and uploading biographical records of Aboriginal people, convicts and free settlers. Robert Liston
Robert Liston (28 October 1794 – 7 December 1847) was a British surgeon. Liston was noted for his speed and skill in an era prior to anaesthetics, when speed made a difference in terms of pain and survival. He was the first Professor of Clinical Surgery at University College Hospital in London and performed the first public operation utilizing modern anaesthesia in Europe. William Glen Liston
Lieutenant Colonel William Glen Liston (30 July 1872 – 18 October 1950; sometimes published as W. Glen Liston) was a British Army doctor and medical entomologist who worked in the Indian Medical Service and was among the first experimenters to demonstrate that plague was transmitted by rat fleas and was involved in developing a plague vaccine. Liston was born in Secunderabad where his father was an Army Chaplain. The surgeon Robert Liston, known for Liston's Splint, was a cousin of his father. Liston was sent to be educated at George Watson's College, Edinburgh followed by studies at the Albany Academy, Glasgow before joining Glasgow University to study medicine. Virginia Liston
Virginia Liston (''née'' Crawford; c. 1890 – June 1932) was an American classic female blues and jazz singer. She spent most of her career in vaudeville. She performed with her husband, Samuel H. Gray, as Liston and Liston. In the 1920s she made a series of recordings that included performances with Clarence Williams and his Blue Five on "You've Got the Right Key, but the Wrong Keyhole" and "Early in the Morning", and with the Clarence Williams Washboard Band on "Cushion Foot Stomp", and "P.D.Q. Charles L. "Sonny" Liston ( 1930 – December 30, 1970) was an American professional boxer who competed from 1953 to 1970. A dominant contender of his era, he became the world heavyweight champion in 1962 after knocking out Floyd Patterson in the first round, repeating the knockout the following year in defense of the title; in the latter fight he also became the inaugural WBC heavyweight champion. Liston was particularly known for his immense strength, formidable jab, long reach, toughness, and his infamously intimidating appearance. Although Liston was widely regarded as unbeatable, he lost the title in 1964 to Muhammad Ali (then known as Cassius Clay), who entered as a 7–1 underdog. Robert Liston (minister)
Robert Liston (22 March 1730 – 11 February 1796) was a Scottish minister who served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1787/88. Life Robert Liston, was born 22 March 1730, the son of John Liston (1687-1764), minister of Aberdour. The Liston family had been much involved in the Covenanter struggles. His great grandfather William had been sentenced to death for his part in the Battle of Rullion Green, though he fled and escaped. Robert began to attend school on 11 February 1735 and, when he was thirteen, he matriculated as a student at the University of Edinburgh on 13 October 1743. The age of 13/14 was the standard age to attend university at that time. He was licensed to preach as a minister of the Church of Scotland by the Presbytery of Dunfermline on 5 September 1753. Sir Robert Liston, GCB FRSE PC (8 October 1742 – 15 July 1836) was a Scottish diplomat and ambassador to several countries. Biography Liston was born at Overtoun House in Kirkliston, Scotland, the son of Patrick Liston of Torbanehill, West Lothian. He studied languages at the University of Edinburgh, and then tutored the sons of the Earl of Minto. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1784. His proposers were Andrew Dalzell, William Robertson, and John Drysdale. He was granted an honorary doctorate (LLD) in 1785. Said to be able to speak ten languages, Liston joined the diplomatic service and enjoyed a career spanning Europe appointed on 22 September 1793, eventually arriving at Constantinople on 19 May 1794. Melba Doretta Liston (January 13, 1926 – April 23, 1999) was an American jazz trombonist, arranger, and composer. Other than those playing in all-female bands she was the first woman trombonist to play in big bands during the 1940s and 1960s, but as her career progressed she became better known as an arranger, particularly in partnership with pianist Randy Weston. Ellen Liston (1838–1885) was an Australian teacher and a writer of early popular fiction. Early life Ellen Liston was born in England, one of five children of David John and Mary Ann Liston (née Bone). David Liston was a wine and spirit merchant, listed as the landlord of the Dover Castle public house in London in 1848. When Liston was 12 the family migrated to Adelaide, South Australia, on the ship ''Candahar''. The family built a house in Parkside, Idsworth Cottage. Liston was a delicate child and educated at home. Following the death of her parents, she and one unmarried brother were left living at the family home. Liston subsequently worked as a governess on Nikerloo Station near Bramfield on Eyre Peninsula from 1867. In addition to her teaching duties, she claimed to be the only female manager of a sheep station. Lawrence G. Liston (born 1952) is an American politician who serves in the Colorado Senate from the 10th district as a member of the Republican Party. He served in the Colorado House of Representatives from the 16th district from 2005 to 2013, and 2017 to 2021. Liston was educated at Wasson High School and the Colorado State University. His activities in the Republican Party started as a precinct leader and then as a district leader before becoming the vice-chair of the Colorado Republican Party. He was elected to the state house in 2004, and served until he lost in the Republican primary for a seat in the state senate to Owen Hill. John Liston (c. 1776 – 22 March 1846), English comedian, was born in London. He made his public debut on the stage at Weymouth as Lord Duberley in ''The Heir at Law''. After several dismal failures in tragic parts, some of them in support of Mrs Siddons, he discovered accidentally that his forte was comedy, especially in the personation of old men and country boys, in which he displayed a fund of drollery and broad humour. An introduction to Charles Kemble led to his appearance at the Haymarket on 10 June 1805 as Sheepface in the ''Village Lawyer'', and his association with this theatre continued with few interruptions until 1830. '' Paul Pry'', the most famous of all his impersonations, was first presented on 13 September 1825 and soon became, thanks to his creative genius, a real personage.
