Listener (band)
Listener is an American spoken word rock band from Fayetteville, Arkansas. Originally a hip hop project by Dan Smith, who used the moniker "Listener", it soon evolved into a full-fledged rock band. The current lineup consists of Smith as vocalist, trumpeter, and bassist together with guitarist Jon Terrey and drummer Kris Rochelle. History Listener originally started as a solo underground hip hop project of vocalist Dan Smith beginning with the commercial release of the album '' Whispermoon'' on Mush Records in 2003. He has also contributed to several collaborative albums with the groups Deepspace5 and Labklik, both of which he is a founding member of. With his second release ''Ozark Empire'' in 2005, Smith began his first "Tour of Homes". ''Whispermoon'' is the debut studio album by Listener. It was released on Mush Records on July 29, 2003. It peaked at number 163 on the CMJ Radio 200 chart and at number 4 on CMJ's Hip-Hop chart. Critical reception Jason MacNeil of AllMusic gave the album 3 stars out of 5, saying, "Not as polished or glossy as bigger rap stars, this record has a certain independent aura around it." Deepspace5 is an underground hip hop supergroup formed in 1997 and currently composed of Beat Rabbi, Manwell?, Freddie Bruno, Listener, Mars ILL (a stand-alone duo consisting of Manchild and DJ Dust), Playdough, Sintax.the.Terrific, Sivion, and Sev Statik. Deepspace5 also previously included Illtripp and The Recon. Since its formation, the collective has sold over 100,000 copies of its recordings, and has performed with KRS-One, Atmosphere, and MF Doom, among others. Career Deepspace5 first coalesced in 1997 at an annual Christian hip hop conference called Cru-vention. Mellophone
The mellophone is a brass instrument typically pitched in the key of F, though models in E, D, C, and G (as a bugle) have also historically existed. It has a conical bore, like that of the euphonium and flugelhorn. The mellophone is used as the middle-voiced brass instrument in marching bands and drum and bugle corps in place of French horns, and can also be used to play French horn parts in concert bands and orchestras. These instruments are used instead of French horns for marching because their bells face forward instead of to the back (or to the side), as dissipation of the sound becomes a concern in the open-air environment of marching. Tuning is done solely by adjusting the tuning slide, unlike the French horn where the pitch is affected by the hand position in the bell. ''Long Live'' is the fourth studio album by The Chariot, released on November 23, 2010. Writing and recording Prior to recording ''Long Live'', Matt Goldman, the producer of all of The Chariot's albums to date, contacted the group in early 2010 and showed his interest in recording their next album live to analog magnetic tape. The act of recording an album live, as opposed to recording each instrument individually and digitally mixing it together later, has been used by The Chariot to achieve a more raw sound. This process was used entirely on their debut album, '' Everything Is Alive, Everything Is Breathing, Nothing Is Dead, and Nothing Is Bleeding'' in 2004.
