Speed Skating
Speed skating is a competitive form of ice skating in which the competitors race each other in travelling a certain distance on skates. Types of speed skating are long track speed skating, short track speed skating, and marathon speed skating. In the Olympic Games, long-track speed skating is usually referred to as just "speed skating", while short-track speed skating is known as "short track". The International Skating Union (ISU), the governing body of competitive ice sports, refers to long track as "speed skating" and short track as "short track skating". An international federation was founded in 1892, the first for any winter sport. The sport enjoys large popularity in the Netherlands, Norway and South Korea. Nils Van Der Poel
Nils Göran van der Poel (; born 25 April 1996) is a Swedish speed skater who is the current World and Olympic record holder and reigning World and Olympic champion in the 5,000 m event and the 10,000 m event. Van der Poel won the 2014 World Junior Championships in Bjugn, Norway. He finished 14th in the men's 5000 metres at the 2018 Winter Olympics. On 2 June 2018, it was announced that he would take a break from speed skating. From 2018 to 2019, van der Poel completed the basic ranger course in the Army Ranger Battalion in Arvidsjaur, Sweden. He became World champion at 5000 meters event at the World Championship on 11 February 2021, the first medal for Sweden in 38 years, and the first gold in 48 years. Emery Chance Lehman (born June 13, 1996) is an American speed skater who represented the United States at the 2014 Winter Olympics, the 2018 Winter Olympics, and the 2022 Winter Olympics. Lehman started playing ice hockey at age six, taking up speed skating in an attempt to improve his hockey at age nine. In his senior year of high school, Lehman won the 10000 meters at the 2013–14 US Senior Championship/Olympic Trials and took second place in the 5000 meters. Joey Mantia (born February 7, 1986) is an American speed skater and inline speed skater, an Olympic bronze medalist, 28-time world champion, and a world record holder. He also won two gold medals at the 2003 Pan American Games and a gold medal at the 2007 Pan American Games. He won the American Speed Skater of the Year award three times in a row, in 2005, 2006, and 2007, and the 2007 Elmer Ringeisen Sportsmanship Award. Dubreuil won his first World Cup medal during the 2014–15 season when he placed third in the World Cup stop in Seoul. Gilmore Junio (born August 6, 1990), also known as Gimoy, is a Canadian speedskater from Calgary. He competes primarily in the short distances of 500 m and 1000 m. A three-time Olympian, Junio competed at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, 2018 Olympic Games in PyeongChang, and 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing. Career Junio won his first ISU World Cup event when he tied for the victory at the event in Salt Lake City during the 2013–14 season. Vincent De Haître
Vincent De Haître (born June 16, 1994) is a Canadian dual-sport athlete competing as both a speed skater and track cyclist who has been in sport since 2000. After competing at his second Olympic games in PyeongChang De Haître made the switch back over to track cycling where he has been competing as a member of the Canadian national team since the fall of 2018 in an effort to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. It is expected that De Haître will return to speed skating in August 2021 after the summer Olympics have concluded. The men's 10,000 m competition in speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 11 February, at the National Speed Skating Oval ("Ice Ribbon") in Beijing. Nils van der Poel of Sweden won the event, a few days after winning the 5000 m distance, and set a new world record. Patrick Roest of the Netherlands won the silver medal, and Davide Ghiotto of Italy the bronze, his first individual Olympic medal. The defending champion and the Olympic record holder was Ted-Jan Bloemen. The silver medalist, Jorrit Bergsma, qualified for the Olympics as well. The bronze medalist, Nicola Tumolero, did not start.
