List Of Works Premiered At The Teatro Capranica
This is a chronological list of works known to have premiered at the Teatro Capranica in Rome. While the vast majority are operas, the list also includes oratorios, cantatas, and plays. The Capranica was originally built as a private theatre in 1679 and converted into a public theatre in 1694. The theatre was closed from 1699 to 1711 when there was a papal ban on public secular performances in Rome. There were other shorter periods of closure in the 18th and 19th centuries, and it definitively ceased operating as a full-scale theatre and opera house in 1881. In a much altered state, it now serves as a conference and event venue. Adriano Morselli was a Venetian librettist active between 1679 and 1691. His libretti have been set to music by composers like Antonio Vivaldi, Alessandro Scarlatti, Giacomo Antonio Perti, Bernardo Sabadini, Carlo Francesco Pollarolo and Domenico Gabrielli. Carlo Sigismondo Capece (21 June 1652 in Rome – 12 March 1728 in Polistena) was an Italian dramatist and librettist. ''Tito e Berenice'' is an opera (''dramma per musica'') in three acts composed by Antonio Caldara to a libretto by Carlo Sigismondo Capece. It premiered on 10 January 1714 at the Teatro Capranica in Rome. The story centers on the love affair between Berenice of Cilicia and the future Roman Emperor Titus. The libretto borrows from earlier plays on the same subject by Corneille (''Tite et Bérénice'') and Racine (''Bérénice''), both of which premiered in 1670 and took as their starting point Suetonius's brief account of the love affair in ''De vita Caesarum''. Background and performance history ''Tito e Berenice'' was the result of a competition set by Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, a prominent patron of the arts in Rome. Antonio Caldara
Antonio Caldara (ca 1670 – 28 December 1736) was an Italian Baroque composer. Life Caldara was born in Venice (exact date unknown), the son of a violinist. He became a chorister at St Mark's in Venice, where he learned several instruments, probably under the instruction of Giovanni Legrenzi. In 1699 he relocated to Mantua, where he became ''maestro di cappella'' to the inept Charles IV, Duke of Mantua, a pensionary of France with a French wife, who took the French side in the War of the Spanish Succession. Caldara removed from Mantua in 1707, after the French were expelled from Italy, then moved on to Barcelona as chamber composer to Charles III, the pretender to the Spanish throne (following the death of Charles II of Spain in 1700 without any direct heir) and who kept a royal court at Barcelona.
