Introduction Women have made major contributions to climate change research and policy and to broader analysis of global environmental issues. They include many women scientists as well as policy makers and activists. Nerilie Abram
Nerilie Abram (born June 1977) is an Australian professor at the ANU Research School of Earth Sciences, Australian National University, Canberra, Australia. Her areas of expertise are in climate change and paleoclimatology, including the climate of Antarctica, the Indian Ocean Dipole, and impacts on the climate of Australia. Early life and education Abram grew up in Wangi Wangi, New South Wales, Australia. She completed her secondary education at Toronto High School. Abram completed a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) degree at the University of Sydney in 2000. India Logan-Riley
India Logan-Riley is a Māori archaeology student and climate activist, who was awarded the 2021 Stanford University Bright Award. Biography Logan-Riley has studied archaeology and Māori history at university. Logan-Riley attended the UN's climate talks in 2015 and 2016, where they were a member of the Indigenous Peoples’ Caucus. Their activism focuses on the rights of indigenous peoples. The impact of their activism has been discussed in the same context as that of Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough. They have spoken out on how rising sea levels will disproportionately affect Māori communities, in particular since their communities are already over-represented in poverty statistics. Judith Lean
Judith L. Lean is an Australian-American solar and climate scientist. She is a senior scientist at the United States Naval Research Laboratory. Lean is a three time recipient of the NASA Group Achievement Award and an elected member and fellow of several academic societies. Education Lean completed a bachelor's degree in physics, with honors, at the Australian National University in 1974 and her doctorate in atmospheric physics at the University of Adelaide in 1980. Her dissertation was titled ''Atmospheric ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy''. Career Lean worked at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences and the Applied Research Research Corporation in Maryland. Taryn Lane is the manager of Hepburn Community Wind Farm, and in 2021 she was inducted to the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in the 'Trailblazer' category. She is a community energy and renewable energy expert. Early life and career Lane obtained a Bachelor and Master of Arts. She lives in Central Victoria, and is the manager of the community owned Hepburn Community Wind Farm, which aims to be a source of 100% sustainable energy for the community. Lane is a director of RE-Alliance, the Coalition for Community Energy, and the director of the Smart Energy Council. Climate Risk
Climate risk refers to risk assessments based on formal analysis of the consequences, likelihoods and responses to the impacts of climate change and how societal constraints shape adaptation options. Common approaches to risk assessment and risk management strategies based on natural hazards have been applied to climate change impacts although there are distinct differences. Based on a climate system that is no longer staying within a stationary range of extremes, climate change impacts are anticipated to increase for the coming decades despite mitigation efforts. Ongoing changes in the climate system complicates assessing risks. Ann Henderson-Sellers
Ann Henderson-Sellers (born 1952) is an Emeritus Professor of the Department of Environment and Geography at Macquarie University, Sydney. She was the Director of the Joint Planning Staff (JPS) of the World Climate Research Programme in 2006 and 2007 and was the Director of the Environment Division at ANSTO from 1998 to 2005. She was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Development) of The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1996-1998. Adriana Dutkiewicz
Adriana Dutkiewicz is an Australian sedimentologist at the University of Sydney. She was awarded the Dorothy Hill award in 2006 and is an ARC Future Fellow. Career Dutkiewicz's research is focussed on sedimentology, and covers a suite of rocks and sediments ranging in age from Archaean to Quaternary. Her research is multi-disciplinary and focusses on global carbon cycles, combining traditional sedimentology with more recent technologies. Dutkiewicz has conducted research in early Precambrian petroleum geology. The Dorothy Hill award described her as "the first to discover oil inclusions preserved in Archaean and early Precambrian rocks and to demonstrate that primordial biomass was sufficiently abundant to generate hydrocarbons". Wendy Craik (born 1949) is an Australian scientist, public policy adviser and company director. Early life and education Gwenneth Jean Steele Craik was born in 1949 in Canberra, the second of four daughters of commerce graduate, Audrey Mavis (née Ion) and Duncan Robert Steele Craik, who later was Commonwealth Auditor-General. She was educated at Telopea Park High School, winning a Commonwealth scholarship in November 1965 for her final two years. She graduated from the Australian National University in 1973 with a BA (Hons) and the University Medal for Zoology. Wendy Bowman (activist)
Wendy Bowman (born c.1934) is an Australian farmer and environmentalist in New South Wales. Thanks to her campaigning, she has been able to prevent the Chinese coal company Yancoal Australia developing coal mining in the Hunter Valley region. She has not only succeeded in keeping her family farm but has protected the local community from the effects of pollution and environmental degradation. In recognition of her efforts, in April 2017 she was one of six environmentalists (and the only woman) to be awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize. Kirsten Benkendorff
Kirsten Benkendorff is a marine scientist who works on molluscs, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory properties and cancer fighting properties. She was awarded Young Australian of the Year in 2000 and a Dorothy Hill Medal for Science in 2011. Early life and career Benkendorff obtained a Bachelor of Science from Macquarie University in 1994, followed by a PhD at the University of Wollongong in 1999. Sue Barrell
Sue Barrell was Chief Scientist at the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM). In 2013 she was awarded a Fellow of the Academy of Technology and Engineering (FTSE). In 2018, Barrell was elected Vice President of Science and Technology Australia. Amongst other topics, she has worked on international science policy climate monitoring, research and policy, and ocean–earth observations. Barrell was the first female meteorologist to join the senior Executive team of the BoM.
