List Of Women Artists In The Armory Show
The list of women artists in the Armory Show attempts to include women artists from the United States and Europe who were exhibited in the Armory Show of 1913. The show contained approximately 1300 works by 300 artists. A high proportion of the artists were women, many of whom have since been neglected. Edith Dimock
Edith Dimock (February 16, 1876 – October 28, 1955) was an American painter. Her work was exhibited at the 1913 Armory Show in New York. She married fellow artist, William Glackens, but continued to use her maiden name professionally after the marriage. Personal life Dimock was born in 1876 in Hartford, Connecticut. She was given the nickname of "Teed", and was the daughter of Ira Dimock, a silk merchant based in Connecticut, and older sister of Stanley, Harold Edwin and Florence Irene Dimock (1889–1962). Dimock developed an interest in art in her childhood and began her education in art in New York in her 20s against the wishes of her parents. Kate Cory (February 8, 1861 – June 12, 1958) was an American photographer and artist. She studied art in New York, and then worked as commercial artist. She traveled to the southwestern United States in 1905 and lived among the Hopi for several years, recording their lives in about 600 photographs. Émilie Charmy
Émilie Charmy (pronounced "shar-mee") (April 2, 1878 – June 7, 1974) was an artist in France's early avant-garde. She worked closely with Fauvism, Fauve artists like Henri Matisse, and was active in exhibiting her artworks in Paris, particularly with Berthe Weill. She had become an artist against the norms for French women in her day and became a well-regarded artist. She painted still lifes, landscapes, portraits, and figure paintings. Unusually for a woman at the time, she made a number of paintings of nude women in poses of sexual abandon. Charmy's initial works were Impressionism, Impressionist and Post-Impressionism, Post-Impressionist paintings. As her career evolved, she was influenced by Fauvism and the School of Paris movements. Mary Cassatt
Mary Stevenson Cassatt (; May 22, 1844June 14, 1926) was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh's North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France, where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children. She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense. Edith Woodman Burroughs
Edith Woodman Burroughs (1871 in Riverdale-on-Hudson, New York – 1916 in Flushing, Queens) was an American sculptor. Her work was included in the 1913 Armory Show. Biography Born in Riverdale, New York, Woodman began studying with master artists art at the early age of 15, working with Kenyon Cox and Augustus Saint Gaudens at the Art Students League. By the age of 18 she was supporting herself by designing objects for churches as well as for the Tiffany and Company. In 1893 she married artist Bryson Burroughs, the future curator of paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. She spent the next two years in Paris where she studied with Jean-Antoine Injalbert and Luc-Olivier Merson. Bessie Marsh Brewer (1884–1952) was a Canadian-American printmaker, painter, sculptor and teacher. She studied at the New York School of Applied Design for Women and at the Art Students League with Robert Henri and John Sloan. Florence Howell Barkley
Florence Howell Barkley (1880-1954) was an American landscape painter and illustrator best known for depictions of seascapes in oil and watercolor and illustrations in many popular newspapers in pen and ink. During this time, she was one of few women who was able to receive formal training in the arts. Although her most well-known work was created in 1912 and exhibited in 1913, her career was disrupted by World War I, and thereafter consisted mostly of freelance illustration work.
