This is a list of villages in New York, which includes all 534 villages in the U.S. state of New York. At the time of the 2010 United States Census, the state of New York had 555 villages. The administrative divisions of New York are the various units of government that provide local services in the State of New York. The state is divided into boroughs, counties, cities, townships called "towns", and villages. (The only boroughs, the five boroughs of New York City, have the same boundaries as their respective counties.) They are municipal corporations, chartered (created) by the New York State Legislature, as under the New York Constitution the only body that can create governmental units is the state. Harrisville, New York
Harrisville is a hamlet and former village in Lewis County, New York, United States. The community is now a census-designated place. The population was 628 at the 2010 census. Harrisville is in the northeastern part of the town of Diana and is south of Gouverneur. On May 15, 2018, residents voted to dissolve the village by a vote of 112–70, and it took effect on December 31, 2018. As of the 2019 American Community Survey, the U.S. Census Bureau still lists Harrisville as a village. History In 1815, Joseph Bonaparte, elder brother of Napoleon I and former King of Spain, purchased a tract of land from James Le Ray, part of which became the town of Diana. Harrisville, the largest community in the town, takes its name from Foskit Harris, who settled there in 1833. Saranac Lake, New York
Saranac Lake is a village in the state of New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,406, making it the largest community by population in the Adirondack Park. The village is named after Upper, Middle and Lower Saranac lakes, which are nearby. The village of Saranac Lake covers parts of three towns ( Harrietstown, St. Armand, and North Elba) and two counties (Franklin and Essex). The county line is within two blocks of the center of the village. At the 2010 census, 3,897 village residents lived in Harrietstown, 1,367 lived in North Elba, and 142 lived in St. Armand. The village boundaries do not touch the shores of any of the three Saranac Lakes; Lower Saranac Lake, the nearest, is a half mile west of the village. Rushville, New York
Rushville is a village in Ontario and Yates Counties in the U.S. state of New York. The population was 655 in the 2019 American Community Survey. Most of the Village of Rushville is within the Town of Potter in Yates County and a small part is in the Town of Gorham in Ontario County. It is one of two villages in Ontario County that is split between two townships and the only village in Ontario split between two counties. History Rushville was originally called Federal Hollow. The town was called this because many its initial settlers favored the Federalist political party, and it is located in one Canandaigua Lake's many hollows, or valleys. Gowanda, New York
Gowanda is a village in western New York, United States. It lies partly in Erie County and partly in Cattaraugus County. The population was 2,512 at the 2020 census. The name is derived from a local Seneca language term meaning "almost surrounded by hills" or "a valley among the hills". The Erie County portion of Gowanda is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan statistical area, while the Cattaraugus County portion is part of the Olean micropolitan statistical area. The village is partly in the Town of Collins in Erie County and partly in the Town of Persia in Cattaraugus County. Earlville is a village in New York state bisected by two counties: Madison County and Chenango County, United States. The population was 774 as per the 2020 Decennial census, a decrease from the 872 reported in the 2010 census. The village is named after Jonas Earl, a canal commissioner. The village of Earlville is at the intersection of four towns: Sherburne, Hamilton, Lebanon, and Smyrna. The east–west thoroughfare, East and West Main streets, runs along the county line. Dolgeville, New York
Dolgeville is a village in Herkimer and Fulton counties, New York, United States. The population was 2,206 at the 2010 census. The village is named after the industrialist Alfred Dolge. The village is mostly in the eastern part of the town of Manheim (Herkimer County), but is partly in the western edge of the town of Oppenheim (Fulton County). Dolgeville is east of Utica. History The village was founded in 1794 by Samuel Low with the construction of two mills. A grist mill and later a saw mill were built by Captain John Favill on Ransom Creek about 1795. Soon a little settlement sprang up as other settlers moved in; with a blacksmith shop, tannery and school house. Families by the names of Ayers, Spencer, Ransom, Spofford, Lamberson, Brockett and Rundell soon followed and settled the adjoining lands which they cleared for farms. Deposit is a village in Broome and Delaware counties in the U.S. state of New York. The population was 1,663 at the 2010 census. The village, on the county line, is half within the town of Sanford (Broome County) and half within the town of Deposit (Delaware County). The Broome County portion of Deposit is part of the Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The position of the village is at the boundary of White and Indian territory, as imposed by the 1763 Fort Stanwix Treaty. The village was incorporated in 1811 in Delaware County. Deposit is one of only twelve villages in New York still incorporated under a charter, the other villages having incorporated or re-incorporated under the provisions of Village Law. Attica is a village in Wyoming and Genesee counties, New York, United States. The population was 2,547 at the 2010 census. The village is on the northern border of Wyoming County. The village lies mostly within the town of Attica, but the northern part of the village is within the adjacent town of Alexander in Genesee County. History In 1802, Zerah Phelps became the first European-American landowner in the Attica area, which had for centuries been part of territory of the Seneca Nation, one of the Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. Almond (village), New York
Almond is a village located in the town of Almond in Allegany County, New York, United States. The population was 466 at the 2010 census. Because the village is located on the county line, a small part is in the town of Hornellsville in Steuben County. History The first people to settle in the Karr Valley area came from Luzerne County, Pennsylvania in 1796. After the legal formation of Allegany County, New York in 1806, the area that would become Almond was initially a part of the town of Alfred, New York. In 1821, Almond was separated from Alfred by an "act of Legislature." Notably, the area was not named after the almond tree nut, but rather after the Almond River near Edinburgh, Scotland, from where its settlers came.
