Grace Rogers Cooper
Grace Rogers Cooper (November 22, 1924 – November 25, 2004) was a Smithsonian Institution curator, U.S. textile expert and vexillogist, known primarily for her seminal work ''Thirteen-Star Flags: Keys to Identification,'' published in 1973, which exposed a number of "antique" flags as modern replicas. Vexillography is the art and practice of ''designing flags''; a person who designs flags is a vexillographer. Vexillology
Vexillology ( ) is the study of the history, symbolism and usage of flags or, by extension, any interest in flags in general.Smith, Whitney. Alfred Znamierowski
Alfred Znamierowski (21 June 1940 – 23 October 2019) was a Polish vexillologist, heraldist, illustrator, and journalist. During his career he published several books and designed hundreds of coats of arms, flags, banners and seals for over 200 different municipalities and institutions. Biography Znamierowski was born in June 1940 in Warsaw, Poland. He studied geography at the University of Warsaw. In 1965, he left Poland, and from 1966 until 1978 was an editor of the Polish Service of Radio Free Europe in Munich, Germany. In 1978, he settled in the United States and founded The Flag Design Center in San Diego, California. He worked closely with the foremost German heraldist, Ottfried Neubecker, and the American vexillologist Whitney Smith. Znamierowski produced thousands of renditions of coats of arms and flags for their books as well as for numerous encyclopedias in Germany, United States, and Poland. Flag Of Hamilton, Ontario
The flag of Hamilton was designed by Bishop Ralph Spence and granted to the city on July 15, 2003. The flag was specially designed to complement the Canadian flag being a triband with a Canadian pale at centre. The colours are yellow and royal blue. In the centre is a golden yellow cinquefoil which, as the badge of Clan Hamilton, represents the city's name. The chain on the outside symbolizes both unity and the community's steel industry. The six links in the chain represent the city's six communities: Hamilton, Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough, Glanbrook, and Stoney Creek. Ralph Spence (bishop)
David Ralph Spence is a Canadian retired Anglican bishop. Life and vocation Spence was born on 10 March 1942 in Hamilton, Ontario. He received a B.A. degree from McMaster University, Hamilton in 1964 and a L.Th. from Wycliffe College, Toronto in 1968. He was ordained a deacon on 5 May 1968 and then a priest on 1 December 1968 by Bishop Walter Bagnall. Spence was an assistant curate at St. George’s Guelph (1968-1970) and then the rector of St. Bartholomew's Hamilton (1970 -1974). After further incumbencies at St. John's Thorold (1975-1982) and St. Luke’s Burlington (1982-1997) he became the Archdeacon of Trafalgar in 1992 until his consecration to the episcopate as Bishop of Niagara on 21 September 1997 at Christ's Church Cathedral. He was installed at that same cathedral as the tenth Bishop of Niagara on 11 January 1998 and he retired on 29 February 2008. Whitney Smith
Whitney Smith Jr. (February 26, 1940 – November 17, 2016) was a professional vexillologist and scholar of flags. He originated the term ''vexillology'', which refers to the scholarly analysis of all aspects of flags. He was a founder of several vexillology organizations. Smith was a Laureate and a Fellow of the International Federation of Vexillological Associations. Early life Whitney Smith Jr. was born on February 26, 1940 to Mildred and Whitney Smith. As a youth, he lived in Lexington and Winchester, Massachusetts. With Patriots' Day memories and a 1946 gift of ''The Golden Encyclopedia'', Smith's interest in flags was started. At Harvard, he studied political science and received a bachelor's degree in the field in 1961. During his time at Harvard, Smith designed the flag of Guyana. William Gordon Perrin
Lieutenant Colonel William Gordon Perrin, OBE (1874–1931) was an RAF and Navy officer, and the Admiralty librarian from 1908 to 1931. He is most well known for his works on flags; particularly ''British Flags: Their Early History, and Their Development at Sea'' which has been described as the standard by which all other flag books are compared and ''Nelson's Signals'' in which he established that the flags which had been accepted as denoting Nelson's historic signal at Trafalgar were incorrect. Early life Perrin was born on 10 February 1874. At a very early age he lost his father, and his education was thereby curtailed, but what he lacked in scholastic knowledge was more than compensated for in the school of experience and hard work. Ottfried Neubecker
Ottfried Neubecker (22 March 1908 – 8 July 1992) was a German vexillologist and heraldist. Early life and education He was born 22 March 1908 in Kragujevac in Serbia, into the family of a university teacher. From 1925 he studied in Heidelberg, Geneva and Berlin and from 1926 he worked for Ministry of the Interior and for the Reichskunstwart Edwin Redslob, in field of national heraldic and vexillological matters. Career His first work was ''Die Reichseinheitsflagge'', published with Erik Wolf in 1926. This small tract was about the dispute between the black-red-gold and black-white-red colors in Germany. Andrii Grechylo ( uk, Андрій Богданович Ґречило; Andriy Bohdanovych Grechylo / Hrechylo / Greczylo), is a Ukraine, Ukrainian historian, heraldry, heraldist and vexillology, vexillologist. During his career he has published several books and designed hundreds of coats of arms, flags, banners and seals for over 1000 different municipalities and institutions. Biography Andrii Grechylo was born on November 19, 1963, in Lviv, Ukraine. He studied architecture at the Lviv Polytechnic. Since 1990, he was a research worker (scholar) of the Hrushevskyi Institute of Ukrainian Archeography and Source Studies, National Academy of Science of Ukraine. Grechylo received his PhD in historical science in 1996 and defended a dissertation titled "Ukrainian Municipal Heraldry: Tendencies of Evolution".
