Theatre Director
A theatre director or stage director is a professional in the theatre field who oversees and orchestrates the mounting of a theatre production such as a play, opera, dance, drama, musical theatre performance, etc. by unifying various endeavors and aspects of production. The director's function is to ensure the quality and completeness of theatre production and to lead the members of the creative team into realizing their artistic vision for it. The director thereby collaborates with a team of creative individuals and other staff to coordinate research and work on all the aspects of the production which includes the Technical and the Performance aspects. The technical aspects include: stagecraft, costume design, theatrical properties (props), lighting design, set design, and sound design for the production. George Abbott
George Francis Abbott (June 25, 1887 – January 31, 1995) was an American theatre producer, director, playwright, screenwriter, film director and producer whose career spanned eight decades. Early years Abbott was born in Forestville, New York, to George Burwell Abbott (May 1858 Erie County, New York – February 4, 1942 Hamburg, New York) and Hannah May McLaury (1869 – June 20, 1940 Hamburg, New York). He later moved to the city of Salamanca, which twice elected his father mayor. In 1898, his family moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he attended Kearney Military Academy. Within a few years, his family returned to New York, and he graduated from Hamburg High School in 1907. Paul Berman
Paul Lawrence Berman (born 1949) is an American writer on politics and literature. His books include ''Terror and Liberalism'' ( a ''New York Times'' best-seller in 2003), ''The Flight of the Intellectuals'', ''A Tale of Two Utopias'', ''Power and the Idealists'', and an illustrated children's book, ''Make-Believe Empire.'' He edited, among other anthologies, ''Carl Sandburg: Selected Poems'', for the American Poets Project of the Library of America. Born to a Jewish family, Berman attended Columbia University, receiving an M.A. in American history in 1973. Berman was a longtime contributor to ''The Village Voice'', then ''The New Republic''. Julian Beck
Julian Beck (May 31, 1925 – September 14, 1985) was an American actor, stage director, poet, and painter. He is best known for co-founding and directing The Living Theatre, as well as his role as Reverend Henry Kane, the malevolent preacher in the 1986 movie '' Poltergeist II: The Other Side''. The Living Theatre and its founders were the subject of the 1983 documentary ''Signals Through The Flames''. Early life Beck was born on May 31, 1925, in the Washington Heights, Manhattan, to Mabel Lucille (), a teacher, and Irving Beck, a businessman. He briefly attended Yale University, but dropped out to pursue writing and art. He was an abstract expressionist painter in the 1940s, but his career turned upon meeting his future wife. Emjo Basshe
Emjo Basshe (born Emmanuel Iode Abarbanel Basshe or Emanuel Joseph Jochelman; January 20, 1898 – October 29, 1939) was a Lithuanian-born Jewish American playwright of Spanish ancestry and theatre director who co-founded New York City's New Playwrights Theatre in 1926. A recipient of 1931 Guggenheim Fellowship for creative work in theatre and drama, and one of the initial members, in 1935, of the Communist Party-founded League of American Writers, he won first prize for ''Thunderbolt'', also referenced as ''Thunder-Clock'', which was judged in a University of Chicago competition to be the "best unproduced long play of the year 1935". John Barton (director)
John Bernard Adie Barton, CBE (26 November 1928 – 18 January 2018), was a British theatre director and teacher whose close association with the Royal Shakespeare Company spanned more than half a century. Early life John Barton was the son of Sir Harold Montague and Lady Barton (née Joyce Wale). He was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge and while at Cambridge directed and acted in many productions for the Marlowe Society and the ADC. At the Westminster Theatre in July 1953 he directed his first London production, ''Henry V'' for the Elizabethan Theatre Company. Neil Bartlett (playwright)
Neil Vivian Bartlett, OBE, (born 1958) is a British director, performer, translator and writer. He was one of the founding members of Gloria, a production company established in 1988 to produce his work along with that of Nicolas Bloomfield, Leah Hausman and Simon Mellor.From the programme to the 1993 Traverse Theatre production of ''Night After Night''. His work has garnered several awards, including the 1985 Perrier Award (as director for Complicite, for ''More Bigger Snacks Now''), the Time Out Dance Umbrella Award (for ''A Vision of Love Revealed in Sleep''), a Writers Guild Award (for ''Sarrasine''), a Time Out Theatre Award (for ''A Judgement in Stone''), and the Special Jury Prize at the Cork Film Festival (for ''Now That It's Morning''). Dominic Barber
Dominic Anthony Barber (21 July 1955 – 9 May 2003) was an English theatre director. Biography Barber trained at Dartington College of Arts. In 1979, aged 24 and early in his career, he became an outspoken advocate of arts council funding and theatre in education. He became assistant director to Ian Emmerson at the Maddermarket Theatre, Norwich and in 1983 moved to the Wyvern Theatre, Swindon as Community Drama Director. In 1985, he was appointed Resident Theatre Director at South Hill Park Arts Centre in Bracknell. During this time he became a trustee of The Ark, a creative centre for students with learning difficulties, for whom he took weekly drama workshops. He also worked as a Drama Tutor at Broadmoor Hospital and took weekly acting workshops with the patients there. An interview given with Rob Ferris in 1992 about his work in Broadmoor is indicative of Barber's broader directorial approach. Steven Atkinson
Steven Atkinson (born 4 May 1984) is a British producer working in theatre and film. He co-founded and led HighTide, one of the UK's theatre companies, as well as the National Portfolio Organisation of Arts Council England. Atkinson has commissioned and produced more than 80 new plays in theatres, including the Royal National Theatre, National Theatre, The Old Vic, Royal Court Theatre, Young Vic, and Off-Broadway. Libby Appel
Libby Appel (born May 14, 1937) served as the fourth artistic director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) from 1995 to June 2007. Appel directed more than 25 productions at OSF, and her artistic vision influenced the 11 plays presented each year during her tenure. Despite the festival's name, she placed increased emphasis on new works. “We have made major connections with world playwrights, artists whose voices we’re particularly interested in.” Appel said. “We commission playwrights, we develop plays here; we have playwrights in residence. Threes Anna
Threes Anna (pseudonym of Threes Schreurs, born in Vlaardingen, The Netherlands, 1959) is a novelist, theatre and film maker. Biography Threes Anna is trained as a visual artist. In 1985, Anna was engaged in theatre company Dogtroep, specialized in site specific theatre. In 1989, she becomes artistic leader of the company. Under her leadership, Dogtroep creates over fifty performances all over the world. The performances are developed into big visual spectacles with an international cast. Owing to the extent and complexity of the shows, she doesn't perform herself from 1993 onwards, and concentrated on script writing and directing. Apart from her theatre work, she creates and produces documentaries about several different artists and Dogtroep.
