List Of The First 32 Women Ordained As Church Of England Priests
__NOTOC__ On 12 March 1994, the first 32 women were ordained as Church of England priests. The service was officiated by Bishop Barry Rogerson at Bristol Cathedral. Rogerson ordained the women in alphabetical order, so Angela Berners-Wilson was the very first woman to be ordained. The youngest woman to be ordained was Karen MacKinnon at age 30, with Jean Kings being the second youngest. The oldest was 69. In 2004 the tenth anniversary of the ordinations was celebrated at Bristol Cathedral and, by then, one of the priests had died and 14 had retired. Barry Rogerson
Barry Rogerson (born 25 July 1936) was the first Bishop of Wolverhampton from 1979 to 1985 and, from then until his retirement in 2002, the Bishop of Bristol. He holds Honorary degrees from Bristol & the West of England Universities. He was made a Freeman of the City and County of Bristol in 2003. Career Rogerson was educated at the University of Leeds and Wells Theological College. Initially a bank employee, he was ordained in 1962, after which he held curacies at St Hilda's South Shields and St Nicholas’ Bishopwearmouth. From 1967 to 1975 he was a lecturer at Lichfield Theological College and then Salisbury and Wells Theological College, after which he became Vicar and subsequently Team Rector of St Thomas' Church, Wednesfield—a post he held until his ordination to the episcopate. Vivienne Faull
Vivienne Frances Faull (born 20 May 1955) is a British Anglican bishop and Lord Spiritual. Since 2018, she has served as the Bishop of Bristol. In 1985, she was the first woman to be appointed chaplain to an Oxbridge college. She was later a cathedral dean, and the only female cathedral provost in Church of England history, having served as Provost of Leicester from 2000 to 2002. Early life Faull was born on 20 May 1955. She was educated at The Queen's School, Chester, an all-girls independent school. She studied at St Hilda's College, Oxford, and graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree; it was promoted to a Master of Arts (MA Oxon) in 1982. When she began studying theology at St John's College, Nottingham, she became the first woman to be paid by the Church of England to do so. A woman is an adult female human. Prior to adulthood, a female human is referred to as a girl (a female child or adolescent). The ordination of women in the Anglican Communion has been increasingly common in certain provinces since the 1970s. Several provinces, however, and certain dioceses within otherwise ordaining provinces, continue to ordain only men. Disputes over the ordination of women have contributed to the establishment and growth of progressive tendencies, such as the Anglican realignment and Continuing Anglican movements. Some provinces within the Anglican Communion ordain women to the three traditional holy orders of bishop, priest, and deacon. Other provinces ordain women as deacons and priests but not as bishops; others are still as deacons only. Rachel Treweek
Rachel Treweek (née Montgomery; born 4 February 1963 at Broxbourne, Hertfordshire) is an Anglican bishop who sits in the House of Lords as a Lord Spiritual. Since June 2015, she has served as Bishop of Gloucester, the first female diocesan bishop in the Church of England. A former speech and language therapist, from 2011 until 2015, she was the Archdeacon of Hackney in the Diocese of London. The Diocese of Chester is a Church of England diocese in the Province of York covering the pre-1974 county of Cheshire and therefore including the Wirral and parts of Stockport, Trafford and Tameside.
