List Of Subfamilies And Genera Of Apocynaceae
This is a list of subfamilies and genera of the dogbane family Apocynaceae. A list of synonyms for the various genera is givenhere together with supporting references. Subfamilies Apocynoideae and Rauvolfioideae are part of Apocynaceae ''sensu stricto'', whilst the other three subfamilies belong to the former Asclepiadaceae. The family Apocynaceae is the result of a conflation of these two families. *Apocynoideae *Asclepiadoideae *Periplocoideae *Rauvolfioideae * Secamonoideae Genera ''Note: this list may be incomplete'' * ''Acokanthera'' * ''Adenium'' * '' Aganonerion'' * '' Aganosma'' * ''Alafia'' * '' Allamanda'' * '' Allomarkgrafia'' * '' Allowoodsonia'' * ''Alstonia'' * ''Alyxia'' * '' Amalocalyx'' * '' Ambelania'' * '' Amsonia'' * '' Ancylobothrys'' * '' Anechites'' * '' Angadenia'' * ''Anodendron'' * ''Apocynum'' * '' Araujia'' * '' Artia'' * ''Asclepias'' * '' Asketanthera'' * ''Aspidosperma'' * '' Baissea'' * ''Beaumontia'' * ''Bousigonia'' * ''Brachystelma'' * '' Cabuca ...

Subfamilies
In biological classification, a subfamily (Latin: ', plural ') is an auxiliary (intermediate) taxonomic rank, next below family but more inclusive than genus. Standard nomenclature rules end subfamily botanical names with "-oideae", and zoological names with "-inae". See also * International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants * International Code of Zoological Nomenclature * Rank (botany) * Rank (zoology) In biological classification, taxonomic rank is the relative level of a group of organisms (a taxon) in an ancestral or hereditary hierarchy. Alstonia
''Alstonia'' is a widespread genus of evergreen trees and shrubs, of the family Apocynaceae. It was named by Robert Brown in 1811, after Charles Alston (1685–1760), professor of botany at Edinburgh from 1716 to 1760. The type species ''Alstonia scholaris'' (L.) R.Br. was originally named ''Echites scholaris'' by Linnaeus in 1767. Description ''Alstonia'' consists of about 40–60 species (according to different authors) native to tropical and subtropical Africa, Central America, Southeast Asia, Polynesia and Australia, with most species in the Malesian region. These trees can grow very large, such as ''Alstonia pneumatophora'', recorded with a height of 60 m and a diameter of more than 2 m. ''Alstonia longifolia'' is the only species growing in Central America (mainly shrubs, but also trees 20 m high). The leathery, sessile, simple leaves are elliptical, ovate, linear or lanceolate and wedge-shaped at the base. The leaf blade is dorsiventral, medium-sized to large and di ...

Asclepias
''Asclepias'' is a genus of herbaceous, perennial, flowering plants known as milkweeds, named for their latex, a milky substance containing cardiac glycosides termed cardenolides, exuded where cells are damaged. Most species are toxic to humans and many other species, primarily due to the presence of cardenolides, although, as with many such plants, there are species that feed upon them (e.g. their leaves) and from them (e.g. their nectar). Most notable are monarch butterflies, who use and require certain milkweeds as host plants for their larvae. The genus contains over 200 species distributed broadly across Africa, North America, and South America. It previously belonged to the family Asclepiadaceae, which is now classified as the subfamily Asclepiadoideae of the dogbane family, Apocynaceae. The genus was formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753, who named it after Asclepius, the Greek god of healing. Flowers Members of the genus produce some of the most complex flowe ...

Apocynum
''Apocynum'', commonly known as dogbane or Indian hemp, is a small genus of the flowering plant family Apocynaceae. Its name comes from Ancient Greek , from "away" and "dog", referring to dogbane ('' Cionura erecta''), which was used to poison dogs. The genus is native to North America, temperate Asia, and southeastern Europe. ''Apocynum'' species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species, including the mouse moth and the queen butterfly. Uses ''Apocynum cannabinum'' was used as a source of fiber by Native Americans. '' Apocynum venetum'' () is used as an herbal tea in China. Dogbane contains cymarin, a cardiotonic agent formerly used to treat cardiac arrhythmia in humans. Species Almost 300 names have been proposed in the genus for species, subspecies, and forms. , only the following five species and hybrids are currently recognized, with several subspecies and varieties accepted for '' A. androsaemifolium'' and '' A. venetum'' (see their respecti ...
