List Of Stretched Cruise Ships
Cruise lines have opted to increase capacity by stretching their current ships. Known as lengthening, the process of enlarging a cruise ship usually includes cutting the ship in half and adding a new midsection, adding more cabins and public areas. The first modern cruise ship to be stretched was Royal Caribbean Line's ''MS Formosa Queen, Song of Norway'' in 1977. MS Formosa Queen
MS ''Song of Norway'' (later ''Sundream'', ''Dream Princess'', ''Dream'', ''Clipper Pearl'', ''Clipper Pacific'', ''Festival'', ''Ocean Pearl'', ''Formosa Queen'') was one of the first ships purpose-built as a cruise ship. She was the first ship of Royal Caribbean International when she entered operation in 1970. She was sold for scrap in 2013 and broken up in 2014, after serving her last years as a gambling ship. Statistics The vessel originally had a gross tonnage of 18,000 tons, and could carry 724 passengers. Following the 1978 refit, she was lengthened by 85 feet, to provide for 1024 passengers and increasing her size to 23,000 gross tons. History The vessel was constructed in Helsinki, Finland in 1970. Cammell Laird is a British shipbuilding company. It was formed from the merger of Laird Brothers of Birkenhead and Johnson Cammell & Co of Sheffield at the turn of the twentieth century. ''Margaritaville at Sea Paradise'' (formerly ''Grand Classica'', ''Costa neoClassica'', and ''Costa Classica'') is a cruise ship that is operating for Margaritaville at Sea. Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven GmbH is a dockyard in Bremerhaven. It was founded in 1863 by the shipping company Norddeutscher Lloyd, first mainly used as a repair workshop for the company’s own merchant fleet. This new yard was established in exchange and addition to the former small Lloyd-workshop in Bremen which was already founded in 1857. In the 1970s, the shipyard became member of the Vulkan Group. As of 2016, the Lloyd facility is the last remaining major dockyard in Bremerhaven. It employs 500 workers and occupies 260,000 m². Ships with a draught as deep as 11.5 m can be accommodated. The dockyard is solely focused on ship repair, maintenance and reconstruction.
