List Of Strawberry Cultivars
The following is a partial list of strawberry cultivars. Strawberries come in a wide assortment of commercially available cultivars (cultivated varieties). Differences between cultivars may include the date the fruit ripens, disease resistance, freezing quality, firmness, berry size, berry shape, and flavor. Many different cultivars have been developed at the University of California (Davis campus), by Driscoll Strawberry Associates Inc. (Watsonville, California), the United States Department of Agriculture, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and East Malling Research Station in the UK. Almost all the strawberries listed below are cultivars of ''Fragaria'' × ''ananassa''. Two cultivars listed here ('Frel' () and 'Samba' ()) are bigeneric hybrids, grown mainly for their flower colour rather than their fruit, using a closely related species (''Potentilla palustris'' = ''Comarum palustre'') to introduce pink or red colouration to the flowers. Camino Real (variety)
cv. Camino Real is a cultivar of strawberry produced by the Shaw & Larson era of the UC Davis breeding program. Breeding 'Camino Real' is the result of a cross of Cal 89.230-7 × Cal 90.253-3. It was created in 1994, first fruited in 1995 at the Wolfskill Experimental Orchard near Winters, California, and was renamed from 'C213' to cv. 'Camino Real' and released in 2001. Specific regions 'Camino Real' produces heavily in the Central Coast of California. 'CR' yields over more than cv. ' Chandler', and berries average 27 grams vs. 21 grams, in Fresno County, California. 'Camino Real' is unusually vulnerable to Botrytis Fruit Rot (''Botrytis cinerea'') in the conditions around the University of Florida's Gulf Coast Research and Education Center in Dover, Florida. Achene
An achene (; ), also sometimes called akene and occasionally achenium or achenocarp, is a type of simple dry fruit produced by many species of flowering plants. Achenes are monocarpellate (formed from one carpel) and indehiscent (they do not open at maturity). Achenes contain a single seed that nearly fills the pericarp, but does not adhere to it. In many species, what is called the "seed" is an achene, a fruit containing the seed. The seed-like appearance is owed to the hardening of the fruit wall (pericarp), which encloses the solitary seed so closely as to seem like a seed coat. Examples The fruits of buttercup, buckwheat, caraway, quinoa, amaranth, and cannabis are typical achenes. The achenes of the strawberry are sometimes mistaken for seeds. Mahabaleshwar Strawberry
Mahabaleshwar strawberry is a strawberry grown in the hilly slopes of Mahabaleshwar, which accounts for about 85 percent of the total strawberry produced in India. Strawberry, along with raspberry, mulberry and gooseberry, is produced on a large scale in and around Mahabaleshwar. Mahabaleshwar strawberry obtained the geographical indication (GI) tag in 2010. History Strawberries were brought to the region from Australia during the British colonial rule. Mahabaleshwar was the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency under British Raj. Since then, local farmers have developed their own varieties of the fruit, some of which are imported from other places. Production The Mahabaleshwar strawberry is grown mainly in the hilly Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani belt in western Maharashtra. Little Scarlet
Little Scarlet is a type of ''Fragaria virginiana'', a wild strawberry, and the name of a jam made from it. The species of strawberry is from North America but this selection is grown only in Britain. This tiny berry is approximately one fifth the size of a commercially cultivated strawberry, similar in size to the alpine or wood strawberry. The plant was brought to Britain in the 1900s by C.J. Wilkin, a member of the family who own the Wilkin & Sons conserve manufacturing company in Tiptree, Essex, following a visit to the United States where the plant grew wild. The company seems to be the only commercial grower of this fruit anywhere in the world. The Little Scarlet conserve sells in around fifty countries at prices up to US$19 for a 12oz jar.
