State highway loops in Texas are owned and maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Loop 300 Loop 300 was a proposed route in Snyder. It was designated on February 23, 1956, from US 180 west of the city, around its west and south sides, to US 84 southeast of it. The route was never built, and the designation was cancelled on October 1, 1968. Loop 301 Loop 301 is located in Sulphur Springs. It runs from the junction of SH 19 and SH 154 to I-30/ US 67. Loop 301 was designated on February 23, 1956, from US 67 (later Loop 313; now Business US 67) and SH 19 in west Sulphur Springs, northward to SH 154. Crockett, Texas
Crockett is a city and the county seat of Houston County, Texas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 6,332. Houston County is the oldest county and Crockett the fifth-oldest city in Texas. History The town was named after Davy Crockett, who had camped nearby on his way to the Alamo; the site was very near the Old San Antonio Road. Andrew Edwards Gossett, a Texas Revolution soldier from Maury, Tennessee, along with his father and brother, donated the land for the town in 1836, and named it after Crockett, whom they had previously known. The town was incorporated in 1837, and a post office was granted the following year. Crockett was connected to Nacogdoches by stage service. Texas State Highway 179
State Highway 179 (SH 179) is a short Texas state highway, traveling between Teague and Dew. The route was designated on October 26, 1932, along its current route. Route description SH 179 begins in Teague at Business US 84. The route continues as Main Street through low-density residential development before meeting FM 553 at the latter's southern terminus. Leaving Teague, SH 179 travels eastward through a rural area until reaching Dew. Upon entering Dew, the highway meets I-45 at an interchange flanked by commercial development. SH 179 then passes by a school before reaching its eastern terminus at FM 489, which provides access to SH 75. History SH 179 was designated on October 26, 1932, from Teague to SH 32 (now SH 75). Teague, Texas
Teague is a city in Freestone County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,384 at the 2020 census. Settlement The area was first settled around the time of the Civil War. During the latter half of the nineteenth century, a small community known as "Brewer" grew up at the site. In April 1886, a resident wrote that all they needed was a jeweler and shoemaker. The resident went on to inventory all the businesses they had, such as a good dry goods and grocery store, a blacksmith and wood shop, and a barber. Later in 1886, a gin was to open. The 1895 Rand McNally atlas shows Brewer with a post office and no express office or railroad. Also in 1895, Brewer Baptist Church ministered by A. B. Tedder had 109 members. The residents incorporated the new town as "Teague" in 1906, named after Betty Teague, the niece of railroad magnate Benjamin Franklin Yoakum, who was building the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway through the county at the time. Freestone County is a county in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 19,435. Its county seat is Fairfield. The county was created in 1850 and organized the next year. History Native Americans Archeological evidence of the farming Kichai band of the Caddoan Mississippian culture dates to 200 BCE in the area. The Hernando de Soto expedition of 1541 resulted in violent encounters with the Caddo Native Americans who occupied the area. Spanish and French missionaries carried smallpox, measles, malaria, and influenza as endemic diseases; the Caddo suffered epidemics, as they had no acquired immunity to these new diseases. Goodfellow Air Force Base is a nonflying United States Air Force base located in San Angelo, Texas, United States. As part of Air Education and Training Command, Goodfellow's main mission is cryptologic and intelligence training for the Air Force, Space Force, Army, Coast Guard, Navy, and Marine Corps. Houston Harriman Harte was a newspaperman who co-founded Harte-Hanks Communications. Harte was born January 12, 1893 in Knob Noster, Missouri. After a year at the University of California, Harte returned to the University of Missouri, where he received his degree in journalism in 1915. Journalism Harte went to work as Business Manager for the ''Missouri Republican'' and was then its editor and publisher until 1920. Hanks' first newspaper acquisitions were the ''Abilene Reporter-News'' and the ''San Angelo Standard''. During the 1920’s and 30’s, he continued to acquire other newspapers, including the ''Corpus Christi Times ''. Harte-Hanks Newspapers was created in 1948.
