The Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly is the title given to the presiding officer (chair) of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The Speaker's official role is to moderate debate, make rulings on procedure, announce the results of votes, etc. The Speaker decides who may speak and has the powers to discipline members who break the procedures of the Assembly. The Speaker often also represents the body in person, as the voice of the body in ceremonial and some other situations. Many bodies also have a speaker '' pro tempore'' or deputy speaker, designated to fill in when the speaker is not available. West Bengal Legislative Assembly
The West Bengal Legislative Assembly is the unicameral legislature of the Indian states and territories of India, state of West Bengal. It is located in the B. B. D. Bagh area of Kolkata, the capital of the state. Members of the Legislative assembly are directly elected by the people. Sankar Das Banerji
Sankar Das Banerji (January 1903 – 23 March 1994) was a Bengali Indian politician and barrister. He was the Speaker of West Bengal State Assembly and former Finance Minister of West Bengal. Banerji was a prominent criminal lawyer of his time in the Calcutta High Court. His nephew Satyabrata Mookherjee was a former Indian Union Minister of State. Early life Banerji was born in Kolkata in 1903 in British India. He hails from a Jamindar family of Paglachandi village, Plassey in Nadia district. His father passed from University College Hospital, of London and worked with Louis Pasteur. Banerji studied in Hindu School, Kolkata and acquired law degree from the Calcutta University, later he joined Lincoln's Inn, called to the Bar in 1927. After returning to India he started practice in the Calcutta High Court. He served as the Standing Counsel of Government of West Bengal in Calcutta High Court from 1950 to 1957. Sonali Guha
Sonali Guha (born 27 December 1968) is an Indian politician from the state of West Bengal. Guha is a Bharatiya Janata Party politician. She was elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from Satgachhia for four terms to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and was the first female deputy speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly as a member of the Trinamool Congress. Later she joined Bharatiya Janata Party after she was denied a ticket to contest the 2021 assembly elections. Kalimuddin Shams
Kalimuddin Shams (13 February 1939 – 4 March 2013) was an Indian politician, belonging to the All India Forward Bloc. Abdul Hamid Chowdhury
Abdul Hamid Chowdhury ( bn, আব্দুল হামিদ চৌধুরী; died 4 September 1969) was a Bengali politician and zamindar who was the Speaker of the East Pakistan Provincial Assembly from 1962 to 1968. Early life and family Chowdhury was born into a Bengali Muslim ''zamindar'' family in the village of Nagbari in Tangail, Mymensingh district, Bengal Presidency. His only son, Abu Sayeed Chowdhury, was a former President of Bangladesh. His grandson, Abul Hasan Chowdhury, was the former State Minister of Foreign Affairs. Career Chowdhury served as the Deputy President of the Bengal Legislative Council from 1940 to 1947. After the partition of Bengal in 1947, he served in Calcutta as the deputy high commissioner and as the dean of diplomatic corps on behalf of the Dominion of Pakistan from 1951 to 1953. Hamidul Huq Chowdhury ( bn, হামিদুল হক চৌধুরী) ( ur, حمید الحق چودھری) (1901–1992) was a Bangladeshi politician. He was the founder of ''The Pakistan Observer'', an English-language newspaper which changed its name to ''The Bangladesh Observer'' after the Bangladesh Liberation War. He was educated in Dhaka and Calcutta, and had a career as a lawyer, politician and newspaper proprietor. Ashraf Ali Khan Chowdhury ( bn, আশরফ আলী খান চৌধুরী; 1878 – 8 December 1941) was a Bengali lawyer and politician. Early life Chowdhury was born in 1878 to a Bengali Muslim ''zamindar'' family known as the Chowdhuries of Natore. His father was Khan Bahadur Ershad Ali Khan Chowdhury, member of Bengal Legislative Council, and his mother was Masirunnesa Khanam. He studied law in England and became a Barrister in 1912. Career Chowdhury started his legal career by joining the Calcutta High Court bar. He was introduced to politics by his father and developed a political career under the patronage of Syed Nawab Ali Chowdhury. Hashim Abdul Halim
Hashim Abdul Halim (5 June 1935 – 2 November 2015) was an Indian Communist and politician who was Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from 1982 to 2011. Life and career Halim started his career as a practising lawyer. Halim's father was Abdul Halim, one of the founders of the Communist Party of India in Bengal. He was also an Alderman at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, his uncle, M. Ishaque was a member of the Congress Party and a freedom fighter.
