The Speaker of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature is the legislative speaker and principal presiding officer in the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature (until 1995 called the Eastern Transvaal Provincial Legislature). The Speaker chairs the legislature's rules committee and other political management structures. The Speaker and Deputy Speaker are elected from among the Members of the Provincial Legislature and may be removed by a resolution of the legislature. Their election and powers are regulated by Chapter Six of the South African Constitution. The speaker of a deliberative assembly, especially a legislative body, is its presiding officer, or the chair. The title was first used in 1377 in England. Usage The title was first recorded in 1377 to describe the role of Thomas de Hungerford in the Parliament of England.Lee Vol 28, pp. 257,258. The speaker's official role is to moderate debate, make rulings on procedure, announce the results of votes, and the like. The speaker decides who may speak and has the powers to discipline members who break the procedures of the chamber or house. Violet Siwela
Violet Sizani Siwela is a South African politician who has been the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Small Business Development in the National Assembly of South Africa since 2019. A member of the African National Congress, she has been an MP since 2019. Siwela formerly served as a member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature and as a Member of the Executive Council (MEC) in the provincial government. In 2009 she was elected as the deputy speaker of the provincial legislature. Siwela became the MEC for Agriculture in 2011. Makhosazane Christine Masilela is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature since 2019. She was appointed Speaker of the Provincial Legislature in March 2021. Political career Masilela was elected to her legislative seat in the 2019 general election, ranked 19th on the ANC's provincial party list. Busisiwe Paulina "Busi" Shiba (born 10 May 1965) is a South African politician who is the current Mpumalanga MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs. Blessing Thandi Shongwe (born 28 February 1962) is a South African politician who is currently serving as Mpumalanga's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Culture, Sport and Recreation. She formerly served as Speaker of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature from 2014 until March 2018, when she was first appointed to the Mpumalanga Executive Council. Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature
The Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature (MPL), previously known as the Eastern Transvaal Legislature, is the primary legislative body of the South African province of Mpumalanga. The First Legislature was inaugurated in May 1994 as the Eastern Transvaal Legislature. It was renamed in 1995. Yvonne Nkwenkwezi "Pinky" Phosa (born 4 September 1956) is a South African politician who served as a Member of the National Assembly for the African National Congress from 2014 until 2019.
